Matthew 5:15-16
quote:

15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

The Bible teaches that public prayers shouldn’t be showy or long or done in order to impress men. You can still pray publicly, but that’s why those prayers are typically kept short. Bless your food but don’t try to impress anybody by taking 30min. Neither should you pretend to drop your keys and speed pray under the table.

Dear Harry, when quoting Scripture, its always a good thing to do it in context so as to not look like a fool. In Matthew 6 Jesus is talking about HYPOCRITES, about those that want to be seen doing good but with evil hearts. Otherwise it would contradict scripture in other area of the Bible. The Bible does not contradict itself, ever. Here are just a few examples.

Matthew 26:36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.” (Not in a closet only)

Mark 6:46 And when He had sent them away, He departed to the mountain to pray. (Not in a closet only)

Luke 18:1Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart,(maybe in a closet maybe not, but always pray)

Acts10:9 The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour.(Not a closet only)

1Thes 5:17 pray without ceasing (maybe in a closet)

1Tim 2:8 I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting (if everywhere finds you in a closet then pray, if your not in a closet pray)

Damn it man... religion, warfare, and personal tragedy are topics you should stay far away from.

So Tebow can talk religion but I can't? Ok

His good waaaay out weighs any bad that he's done. I wasn't aware of any public prayer meetings he's had.

Does not a prophet require phrophcy? I do not think that word means what you think it means.

Why does this board hate Tim Tebow? I didn't like him when we had to face him but he's always seemed like a genuine dude to me. Does a lot for charity and I thought he was pretty good on SECN.

He is one of my favorite all time SEC players.

This is the key. The passage Harry quotes, in context, is speaking of doing it only to gain attention to yourself. To put on a show so other men will notice you and bring attention to yourself. I really don't get that feeling from Tebow. He is about as sincere as one can get.

The proper term is "witness". IE is he a true or false witness to the faith he espouses. I suspect that is a theological argument unsuited to this idiom of Rantards.

so scripture is above us?

we have to bow to "theologians" and beg them to explain it to us?

So many posters judging Harry.

I was raised a Catholic, so I don’t know anything about The Bible.

But isn’t there something about judging others in it?

Another outstanding thread Harry.

Bless you.

No! but you are the one who is "seeking attention without true faith" by continuing this personal assault line. You have no spiritual basis for this, only a personal attack on Tebow thinking it will get you attention. Harry, you are just alienating anyone who previous thought you to be entertaining. I recommend you just STFU and slink off for a while.

A great many public events start with a prayer. A lot of people under pressure in public say a prayer. Lots of athletes cross themselves publicly pre-game. Every little league football team I was on, or my sons, said a prayer before the game. I don't believe you started this because you are invested in scripture. I suspect you are only invested in aspersions.

We had moved to New Orleans... and when my oldest was 6 years old playing little league football at Metairie Playground, he came home one day and asked me:

Son:"Dad, do you know how we say a prayer before a game? Well... what does 'Mother Mary full of grace..." mean?"
Me: .. "I think it is a Catholic liturgy.."
Son: "Dad, I'm the only non-Catholic on the team.."

This was a lesson which opened my mind because I had been reared in bible-belt Protestant South. There were about 20 Catholics in the entire town...now I was a minority.

Maybe you should think about that parable a bit and reflect on your attitude toward Christians as illustrated in this line of chat.

Yes there is, found in John 7:24. Jesus said "Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”"

"Judge not" is one of the most over-used clichés in discussions of Christianity (Matthew 7:1). Unfortunately, it's almost always stated out of context. This gives the impression that Jesus simply said, "Do not judge." In fact, Jesus often made a point of telling others that they should judge, but only "with right judgment," as stated here (Deuteronomy 1:16; Matthew 7:2–12). Jesus' frequent teaching was that we should not be superficial in our assessment of other people. However, it is crucial that we separate what is good from what is evil (Ephesians 5:8–16).

Pauls letters were full of judgement of Christians. You cant judge the lost because they’re doing what the lost do. But you should tell them TRUTH.

Just make sure you get the log out of your eye before you judge the one with a speck in their eye.

*sigh* Nowhere did I say it requires theologians to discuss theology. A good discussion of theology requires, like any conversation, intelligent, rational, well informed, open minded beings.

Perhaps you begin to see the problem . . .
