Kinda true. Fayetteville and NWA are more diverse than ever right now, but I'm pretty sure Benton County has more Asians & Indians who came to work in IT at the Big 3 than black people.

Latinos are the largest minority. Asian/Pacific Islanders are probably 2nd.

Well that's extremely racist.

Is it? Maybe it isn't true. We got a Hippie/Commie Community Radio station here before we got an Urban/Hip Hop station (which we have, now, mostly for fat white girls).

The student body is what, 5% African-American? Latinos are 8%.

Demographics drive a lot of these QOL surveys, the same as everybody's "worst shithole" on other threads.

But you're bragging on an article that lists Austin, TX as #1

Austin would be a nice place to live. Austin's primary problem is that it has been growing like crazy for the past 20 years and it's too crowded. I think we're just starting to see the reality of that stuff around here. What used to be secluded hikes are full of people now on nice days (try getting a pic of just yourself on Whitaker Point these days on a Saturday, for example). The Upper Buffalo on a nice Saturday sometimes feels like an amusement park ride, to the point that I only go when I can take a weekday off to do it.

But mostly, it's still awesome here for now.

Understatement of the year.

There are literally more Native Americans in NWA than African Americans, and almost more Asians than African Americans.

The racial makeup of the NWA metro:
89.70% White
1.53% Native American
1.22% African American
1.19% Asian
0.29% Pacific Islander
4.03% from other races
2.04% from two or more races
Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.32%

Yep. I didn't mean that as a shot at Austin but as a reflection of the values used in this ranking. If Austin appeals to people, then NWA would be a really great place for them to live. To each their own

I knew it wasn't high but that is actually crazy to me even after living up there for awhile.

Those are what I would expect NW Idaho or NW Montana to look like

Only 6 of 14 made the list because only 6 of 14 met the minimum population for the survey.

It's a cultural shift. Dickson used to have multiple live-music venues in the 1990s, and many good local bands.

The venues are difrerent, but now it's mostly cover bands, Classic Rock, and folk, and the drinking is the primary focus.

"Live music" in general is in a decline. Kids don't listen to "albums". They download one song. You can't tour much on one song, and half of your potential audience is at home playing video games.

I believe that's true. Though the music scene is the only thing keeping y'all from the Baby Austin comparison that y'all love. Though the art scene is doing very well for it's size.

And with it being April... I want to eat some psychedelics and paddle the Buffalo so fricking bad, right now. That river is truly amazing.

That is just freaking sad. My wife's dad is originally from Baton Rouge and that is not how it used to be. There are a lot of cultural and political comments that could be made about the problem but I will just stick to saying it is sad and totally unnecessary.

I've lived in the Baton Rouge area for most of my 40+ years on this earth, save for a handful of years elsewhere in the south. About 10 years ago, I moved to a Baton Rouge suburb, though I still work in Baton Rouge.

I will just say Baton Rouge is not nearly as nice or safe a place as it was when I was growing up. I do not like to go to Baton Rouge at night outside of going to LSU for games. The danger zones used to be isolated and easy to avoid, and that's no longer the case. There are places and neighborhoods that were great places to live and in which to spend time that are no longer great places to be. My family all still lives in the area or else I probably would have moved elsewhere a long time ago.

To be fair, Baton Rouge's peak was probably in the 1950s, and my parents and grandparents area where they grew up became a war zone by the end of the 1980s. The population continues to shift except that it's shifting out of the parish (county for those of you not familiar with Louisiana terms). The danger slowly escalated over the years but really picked up steam with Katrina. And there appears to be no end in sight. One area of town trying to make its own city doesn't help matters nor does a mayor and metro council hellbent on trying to worsen racial relations.

As for the BR/NO argument, I like to visit New Orleans a handful of times a year for a few hours at a time, preferably during the day. I would not live in New Orleans under any circumstances, but it is a great place to visit.

What do you expect after 50 years of the government paying those on welfare to actually breed more of them?

Unfortunately it’s in Arkansas, so I won’t be relocating.

Believe me, we get plenty of Texas transplants already. The slower it happens, the better. Lunch-time traffic on College Ave is worse today than "gameday" traffic was 10 years ago.

what kind of industry is there, or is it just a bunch of retirees that are enamored with the foothills?
