Thoughts after watching the FGN video on Alabama's run game

Here's the video if it hasn't already been posted on here.
One thing that Brooks pointed out repeatedly is that we have put good tape on earlier in the season for the exact plays we're not executing well anymore. Injuries are a good excuse but ultimately championship football involves coping with injuries. Injuries are inevitable but we seem unable to cope.
I'm beginning to wonder if we do not spend enough time on run blocking install in practice week to week. The degradation of what this team has been repping since the Spring sort of suggests that may be the case. The backups are repping these plays since the Spring too but the execution drop-off is stark. Only going to give yourself a fighting chance with more repetition.
Alabama is only going to go as far as the run game takes them. The explosives may mostly come from the receivers but the on-schedule runs make the play action pop and keep Russell from having to play hero ball. They've got to be able to execute better with backups and banged-up players. Everyone has to do that to win championships. Even the best most well-funded rosters do not have 2-deeps everywhere.

We have no depth. This isn't like before where it's nect man up, that doesn't exist in some areas because B1G introduced transfer portal eliminated all that.
People need to adapt to the fact everyone is thin. Some areas they aren't but others they are. The worst thing you can do mid-season is to run your guys into the ground who are having to play more snaps and take on more workload.
In this new era you can't just disappear a very good starting center and expect no drop off.
It was asinine when I had an argument with another guy on here weeks ago about missing Terrence Green and how that drop off impacted how we played and what we could do and idiots were backing him.
Before it used to just be losing your starting QB, however now? If you pose a superstar WR, RB, Center, Tackle, DL or CB you're screwed when playing another very good team without significant talent missing.
Which shows how much a plant Sankey is... he has literally attempted to kill off this conference and the idiot presidents led by rocky top and UGA watched him work

It is not only a case of missing a player or a few players to injury. It is a case of does that missing player create a new or additional match-up point of failure.
No longer about the Jimmy's and the Joe's but which Jimmy's against which Joe's.

I don’t live in a fantasy land where you lose Jonah Williams in a national title game and a future first rounder Cam Robinson comes in and kicks arse.
That era is gone.
In this era, champions are going to figure something out to turn chickenshit into chicken salad.

Yep. Still got to play the game and be successful with what you DO have.

We need to have a complementary run game, we will never have a dominant one this year.
We run a passing offense. The failure of the passing game against UGA and TN was a failure of the core concepts of that passing game against elite defenses because we couldn't get open and couldnt protect long enough for the deep routes to work.
We need to determine whether that failure can be fixed during the bye week with better execution or if we need to eliminate parts of the playbook entirely and put our emphasis on the intermediate passing game like it was under Ty last year.
As for the run game the execution has fallen apart and with proper blocking could get us back to a level of functional operation in the run game that would help the passing and defensive playcalling, but I just dont think that run game will ever be something we ride to a run in the CFP against defenses with elite fronts.
We just need 0-2 yard runs to become 3-4 yard runs to keep us from living behind the sticks. Add to that Keelons legs and a passing game that isnt trying to hit 40 yard bombs when we can only protect for 20 and I believe the offense will go right back to being nationally elite if not championship level.

Yep. Those old Saban rosters would cost $100+ million per year now.

quote:it makes the teams that play the weak schedules even more advantaged. less injuries means less depth concerns. college football is awful, the entire current era has a big asterisk. should be referred to in history as the asterisk era

Opponents are loading the box to stop the run. Also two deep safeties to stop the deep ball. Our OC doesn’t give Keelon quick hit plays to offset this. It’s not rocket science.

WAAAAY too many long developing plays. No slants, no shuttle pass, no rolling out, nothing.

That would be Alex Underwood, but your point is spot on

As you say.
We're getting old over here.

Good post.
The one thing that sticks out watching the breakdown in the video that most of the plays he broke down were actually working with our blockers having created a great lane. But, one guy totally misses an assignment and that's the defender who turns a big gain into nothing.
Injuries are certainly huge.
Josh Ford was the one missing the block in many and he was great before the arm injury.
Backup center and guard again were missing assignments -- not also getting manhandled like that one UT guy did to them -- just not finding the right block.
The impression from the video was that the plays were working but getting all 7 blockers instead of 6 of 7 to actually block the play correctly was extremely inconsistent.
Not the coach so no idea exactly what fixes that aside from having the regular starters all back and healthy.
