Thought Experiment: If SMU never receives the death penalty...

If SMU never received the death penalty, and they go on being a powerhouse and go with Texas to the Big 12 instead of Baylor (and eventually TCU), would they be as good or better than Ole Miss today?
Ostensibly SMU would be able to continue pumping the cash in and recruiting well and would have been a destination for some players and coaches who ended up going to Ole Miss.
I mean, Lane Kiffin fits into the SMU vibe about as perfect as possible, IMO.

3and10, I'm sorry for you messing with you on the other thread. I actually decently like Bama, when given the options.

They'd be a solid Top 5 Team of Course.
Just like that time Craig James killed those 5 hookers.

Considering SMU's 1980, 1982, and 1985 wins over Texas made you go and squeal to the NCAA and played a big part in their multiple probation's
SMU was immediately investigated after every single one of those wins
I'm sure it was just a coincidence.

There no way a small private school is competitive at that level anymore without a payroll that can keep up.
Maybe they could keep up in NIL, but only if they had maintained a certain level up until now. By the 2000’s and 2010’s, though, even Miami (the most successful private school of recent decades) was an afterthought.
The days of these small schools being competitive more than “every so often” are over. It’s a pure numbers game, and they don’t have them.

We’re about to find out. If you don’t already know they’re spending crazy money in the ACC to make a run . NIL will make SMU or SMU will break NIL, stay tuned.

I would guess they would be more like aTm currently.
They only had a few finishes in the top 15 in their history before the scandal and had been on probation previously.
They would be a name, have a large fan base and get disappointed by mid October.

Yeah, SMU isn't even pretending — they're straight-up trying to buy a championship (and don't care). This is college football now.

ACC Competitiveness Campaign
To ensure our student-athletes can compete effectively in the elite conference starting July 1, 2024, SMU has launched the $125 million ACC Competitiveness Campaign. Donor support will enable us to increase coaching and administrative staff, upgrade facilities and cover greater travel and one-time transition costs, so we start the next era of SMU Athletics from a position of strength.
The drive is part of the comprehensive SMU Ignited campaign and builds on the unprecedented $100 million given by 30 donors in seven days.

quote:This. The Miami comparison is spot on. Even when SMU was winning, they didn't have much fan support. They could draw a big crowd when playing Texas, Arkansas, and A&M, but that was because fans of the visiting schools bought the tickets. They never came close to achieving Miami's level of success on the field, and their entire persona (bunch of preppie snobs) was never going to appeal to a larger audience, the way that Miami's outlaw appeal tapped into a segment of the South Florida population.

SMU and NIL are like hookers, dice and me...a match made in heaven.

Yes. We're talking about the 80's, 90's, and 2000's, before TV money and conference affiliation became the elephant in the room. In this timeline, SMU doesn't get caught, the SWC holds on for a few more years, and SMU beats Baylor and TCU to conference affiliation.
Additionally, SMU wins a National Championship when they outbid Texas for Vince Young and place him at QB, and defeat USC in the 2006 Rose Bowl.
Oh, what could have been for the ponies.

I read Jackie Sherill’s book awhile back. He talked about his time coaching in the SWC at A&M. He said that Texas had more than 80 private eye types on the payroll at one point spying on Aggy coaches, their families, players and players families, etc. All started after Sherrill got there and Aggy started beating Texas every year. Just some crazy arse shite. So, apparently Texas used to do that kind of stuff to any SWC schools that beat them in football. Not just SMU.

You obviously paid no attention to how fast they came up with the cash to go into the ACC. This is Dallas man, not some little hole in the wall town somewhere. Billionaires and Millionaires all over town and most live within earshot of the Pony Band playing on Saturdays at Ford!

I live in DFW, ex boss a few years back was an SMU grad and told me there are many big money alums who want nothing more than SMU to return to it's early 80's glory days, but now they can do it above the table.
With the Dallas Cowboys waning in popularity with every year Jerrah is still running the show...plenty of NIL opportunities for SMU players. They've even rebranded a bit in recent years to emphasize the fact they're located in the heart of Dallas.
Of course they're still a small private school, but they don't need thousands of small money donors if their fat cats are willing to make sizeable investments in getting the football program back to contending with the big boys.
