Well you won't be able to read a defense if you don't look at it. But, surely he misspoke.

Do you think he literally wasn't looking at defenses?
From the quote, it's pretty apparent that he was just running plays as a true freshman when he got on the field, and not actually reading and reacting to the defense.

He said "looking," but what I think he meant was that he was not preparing for opposing defenses like he should've been. I also think he was not prepared for that simple question.

Probably not, he was a true freshman backup. One of five quarterbacks who saw action for them last year.
