I disagree. Bama will do plenty of handing off with Folwer as the lead blocker but they will still have to throw the ball. Even if Coker only hits 50% of his passes, defenses will still have to respect the threat. An empty backfield means Bama will have five receivers which mean the defense will be spread out. That's the perfect time for a designed qb run if you've got one that can actually run.

Well, if he's only hitting 50% of his passes all that means is there will be less people to block and he'll get wrecked by a decent defense.

If Coker is good, I sure as frick wouldn't want him running the balls. It only takes 1 hit to knock you out of contending for a championship.. especially with how bad your backups are

Of course an ex coach will talk up an ex player. However it's not like it happens all the time. I'm not putting all my eggs in how Jimbo views Coker, but it's nice hearing nice things about him from someone in the know. Excuse us for being excited about a national championship coach praising our new, unknown QB.

Typical off season thread... let's all argue something that is pure speculation at this point. The article is just saying that Jimbo likes the guy and thinks he'll succeed at Alabama... one man's opinion.

What if part of what makes him good is his ability to run the ball? I'm not saying he should run 20 times a game but 4 or 5 designed qb runs would help to keep defenses off balance.

Before it gets thrown back in my face, I'm not comparing Coker to these two by any means but what if UF and Auburn took away the running aspect of Tebow's or Cam Newton's game? Sometimes you have to roll the dice and just hope your guy doesn't get hurt if it means giving your team the best chance to be successful.

Only read the first half page of responses. It's pretty simple. He's probably plenty good for us. Our system so far with Saban never HAD to have a first draft NFL caliber QB. He will be OVER qualified for our purposes unless we dramatically change our offensive playbook.

So, in short, as far as the QB position goes he has a shot at being the best one under Saban, which is fine by me!

All I know about Coker is what I've seen on the field. And he's pretty comparable to Brandon Allen in that regard.

We have to wait and see how Coker will do, but now Duke Williams and Leonard Fournette, well that's DIFFERENT.

A five star SEC once in 10 years RB in a run heavy offense, the #1 overall recruit in JUCO in high a powered offense, and a pro style QB getting his first start in the SEC. Hhmmmm, which of these seems more likely to work out?

You are totally FOS. It's common knowledge that the competition for QB was dead even up until game time of their opener (actually the asst. coaches were leaning toward Coker). Coach Fisher made the decision and the rest is history.

Dude, after the spring game, Jameis had all but locked it up. Most FSU fans would tell you that.

I don't doubt that but the FSU head coach says that Coker is the most talented qb that Bama has had under Saban.

It's stupid to say about a high school kid, you're right. However, the kid took a a fricking hand-off in a 7 on 7 drill and went untouched into the endzone from 15 yards out. I don't know that I've seen something like that ever.
