1—Will the SEC presidents vote to allow football players back on campus in June?
2—Will the 2020 college football season start on time?
3—Will there be fans in the seats for the first game?
4—Is it possible that some schools/conferences will decide not to play this season or start the season late?
5—Wouldn't it be unfair if some conferences can bring athletes back to campus earlier than others?

Well, after countless Zoom meetings among officials at every level to discuss possible options, we are finally starting to get close to some really important decisions. Some of those big decisions could come this week.
So let’s take a moment to catch our breath and see where we are with 103 days until the start of college football season. Here are five questions to ponder:
1—Will the SEC presidents vote to allow football players back on campus in June?
quote:
Given the fact that all 14 SEC schools have announced their intention to have students on campus this fall, I expect the presidents to approve the return of athletes to campus sometime in June.
2—Will the 2020 college football season start on time?
quote:
All of the signs, at least in SEC territory, say yes [...] The bigger question is whether or not the teams can get through the entire regular season without another outbreak of the virus that could potentially shut things down. Nobody knows the answer to that question but the possibility has to be a part of the planning.
3—Will there be fans in the seats for the first game?
quote:
I don’t see it. NASCAR started without fans. Golf started without fans. If Major League Baseball can work out its squabbles, it looks like they’ll play at least part of the season without fans. I would expect the NBA to do the same.
4—Is it possible that some schools/conferences will decide not to play this season or start the season late?
quote:
Absolutely. We’re all keeping our eye on California, where governor Gavin Newsom surprised a lot of people this week when he said pro sports will be allowed to play in the state without fans. Now does that mean that college sports will be able to do the same thing? We don’t know that.
5—Wouldn't it be unfair if some conferences can bring athletes back to campus earlier than others?
quote:
There’s going to be a lot of things that won’t be fair in this unprecedented season. Competitive balance is something that is going to be way down the list of priorities when it comes to getting this season played. In short, coaches and fans who are worrying about these kinds of things are going to have to get over it [...] “Everybody—players, coaches, fans, media—are going to have to be flexible.

College football would just feel really weird without fans in the stands. The atmosphere, especially in the sec, is what makes college football great

I agree—to say it’s unfortunate is a gross understatement.
CFB IS the fans.
But given the option of watching the games without fans vs not watching at all ... I think our collective votes would be unanimous.
It’s one year.
Let’s take it as such and hope for the best in the future.

I’d agree with that. And best case scenario the virus doesn’t come back and we’re at least able to have fans by middle of sec play. We all know that’s what really can change a game with home field advantage

I wonder how Vegas will treat home field advantage when setting lines if there are no fans

Great post, EKG! Thx for the latest and thorough update.
Things looking a lot better than a month ago.

Usually it’s about a 3 point difference in favor of the home team with fans if I’m not mistaken. So I’d guess it may change to about .5-1 point difference. Just a wild guess though

Students should be allowed to attend games. I don’t see the logic of banning them if they are already on campus, attending classes, socializing, etc.

My prediction is the following will be allowed to attend. There will be temperature checks at the gates and distancing measures in place.
1. Coaches’ and players‘ immediate families. Markers in place to separate families.
2. Students. Normal allotment (maybe a little more?) spread out throughout the lower bowl.
3. Band Not sure how this will be handled. Maybe just piped in music.

Hmm, interesting.

There is no way around this fact. Crowds
(especially in the SEC) are the life, the
color, the excitement of what makes the game
of football.
Imagine no reaction to each play, or score
or to a call----just moving on robotically, as
if there is no meaning. No thanks. For me
it's either have crowds or sit this season out.

This. Not only is there no significant likelihood of increased spread (since they are in residence, going to class, doing whatever they do socially), but this is also one of the least vulnerable subsets of the population.
I'm optimistic that we may still play with full stadiums, but, if we don't, there really is no good reason for keeping students away. At worst, you could have them spread out, but that would still provide some much needed atmosphere (and may be something that the pros can't match).

How about we just go back to normal?
It’s already been revealed that the death rate is far lower than originally anticipated. Stanford had a study where it’s lower than the flu actually.

This makes zero sense. would you rather have 3 fingers on your hand or no hand at all?

Agreed. Save for 5-10% of the games played, the football itself is pretty bad. The atmosphere is what makes it fun and unique. If you were watching purely for the quality of play, you'd only tune in on Sundays.

No fans, then see ya in 2021.

There is too much money to be made, and too much money that needs to be made. Enter ad revenues from: BEER, INSURANCE, CARS
Those 3 will almost certainly guarantee a season.
Fans? Too early to say. Even without fans, there will be games on television. That is my prediction.

The first virus breakout will end things abruptly if it happens.
