Im pretty sure that many of these states have to integrate illegal immigrants who can’t speak English well. So that would probably impact the literacy rate.

Why? The top 4 states in illegal immigration population are California, Texas, Florida and New York.

And those 4 are the states in red. Makes perfect sense.

I'm sure other states would read more and have a higher literacy if the alternative were watching mizzou be average at sport.

I'm assuming they're classifying non english speakers as illiterate. Knowing how to read in Chinese or Spanish don't count if you can't read 'Murican.

I believe they account for literacy in your primary language even if not English.

However, you are on to something in recognizing that some of the lower literacy rate states have a lot of immigrants / first generation Americans. A lot come from countries/backgrounds that do not focus on literacy.

Congrats on not having as many people that don't speak English as their native language.

I bet New Orleans and Atlanta are really slugging it out to see which city can drag down their respective state the most.

I bet Baton Rouge and Shreveport are pretty equivalent to NOLA.
