I would agree with you to a certain point. Offense was better but the 1999 defense was one of the best in the country. We lost very late to USC, in OT to LSU & Arkansas.
That team could have very well been undefeated going into the Egg Bowl (Ole Miss did beat us by 15 points).
Had some really good wins over FL, Auburn, Bama during the season OTOH.
IF only we would have had the ‘99 defense in 2000. Buts and ifs mean little in retrospect.
Winning that bowl did take some of the sting out of the regular season though.

I actually went to Vegas for that game. Outside of the game great trip. Hogs were totally uninspired. What worse is new

The 1980s were rougher than hell.

Auburn was most likely the SEC team of the decade by defualt.

2000 is when, in hindsight, Arkansas fans got to finally see the rollercoaster ride of having Nutt as the HC. Very mediocre results with some really bad losses and then a couple of really good years when the stars align with the talent before dipping down again.

Nutt, however, was a master of winning just enough games to keep from getting fired in the bad years and then renegotiating his contract during the good years.

But the Snow Bowl err the Independence Bowl on New Years Eve was epic. One of the great and memorable college football games of all time.

Was there. Also, was at the Arkansas game in Starkville which took place the same day as the sleet Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa. Started off as a little snow, then turned to ice pellets and some rain by the end. It was supposed to be mid 50's and partly cloudy. So, I dressed the part. Ended up being mid 30's with snow, sleet, and rain. We also blew a 10 point lead in the 4th to lose to a shitty Arkansas team that cost us the SEC West. I ate nachos with extra jalapeños with no drink just to warm up. Real great day.

We were a pretty lousy team that year. I can't deny it.

Do you mean 2000?

MSU didn’t beat Alabama in 1999. That game ended 19-7 with Alabama winning.

2000 ... SC beat Ohio State, caused Cooper to be fired. The Gamecocks' Ryan Brewer, an OSU reject from Sandusky, Ohio, was the MVP of the Outback Bowl.

2000 was ok for Gamecock fans.

God Bless Lou Holtz. Biggest turnaround in NCAA history that season.

The conference did get to welcome a new program in LSU. According to their fans, I'm pretty sure that's the year they first started playing football.

You are correct.

I have been informed in another thread this morning. Any win against LSU before 2000, was pre-integration and does not count.

I remember UGA hanging around pretty decently with Florida that year for about 27ish minutes then Quincy threw a pick that Lito sheoard returned almaot all tbr way. FL acored and we wrre pretty much done after that. Maybe if we score a TD on that drive things play out different but probably not

I was referring to 2000. The State defense in 1999 was really good. Lost two games to Bama & Arky and only gave up 19 points in each game. Had we been able to combine the 1999 defense with the 2000 offense, State probably wins the conference both years. Unfortunately that is usually the tale with teams. The stars don’t quite align in a given year.

Most people have recency bias, but in the early 2k's the Big12 was arguably the premier conference.
