If you thought this was bad last year, imagine it in the expanded playoff era. 9-3 LSU last year was out of the playoffs but had a shot to play their way in with a UGA win. In the future that scenario would be a 9-3 LSU team currently in the playoffs but out after a UGA loss while 10-2 Alabama is in.
This is the most obvious reason to eliminate the CCG.
Assuming the #1 seed in the expanded SEC is any good (lol), the #3 spot is MUCH more desirable than the #2.
All you’re doing is handing an extra loss to one of your two best teams right before the playoff, thereby benefiting your 3rd best team.
That and you increasing the chances of teams splitting a late-season rematch series… if they both win one in Dec/Jan, it’s a mockery of sports to crown a champ.
Very close to the reason they killed the BCS in the first place ironically lmao.

Eh, I think they SEC championship game will always carry some weight.
I think you hope it does, but I see a clear scenario where the expanded playoff field renders it borderline meaningless.
Sort of how people think of the SECT in basketball or baseball.

All 6 very valid points.
The conference championships are becoming like ncaa basketball tourneys.
Roy Williams of UNC bball called them an unnecessary cocktail party.

With divisions eliminated and the top 2 teams in the game, both teams will already be ranked high enough to make the playoffs. The title game will only be a chance to play your way out of the playoff, get key players injured, and/or decrease your seed instead of an opportunity to play your way in.
This is one of the points I've been making for years when dipshits start caterwauling about expanding the college playoffs. Not only will it ruin the SECCG, it's going to kill the traditional rivalries played on the last week of the season. Say the Gators are ranked #1 and the Noles are #3. Neither one losing would knock them out of the expanded playoffs. No coach is going to risk a Tim Tebow/Charlie Ward/Deion Sanders/Danny Wuerffel on a rivalry game when the playoffs are looming.
We will have taken what makes college football unique and the best sport in America and rendered it as meaningless and dull as a final week matchup in the NFL.

it’s pretty sad to compare where CFB is now versus a mere 10-15 years ago
The conferences representing an actual geographic region and traditional rivalries being at the forefront of the experience is what made the sport fun to keep up with. This NFL-lite thing they’ve been crafting for the last decade is going to be such a sterilized experience compared to what we once had. I hate it.

Conference title games in the B12, ACC, Pac, or even non P5 may be more exciting to watch than the SEC or B10 since those title games will likely actually have playoff implications.
The PAC already takes the 2 highest ranked in their title games and the ACC
will do the same in '23

True, but those conference title games will often determine the only playoff participant from those 3 conferences.

It’s gonna reflect in attendance
Fans are gonna save their money for playoff games instead

You have to be a Conference Champ to get the 1st Round bye...
So lose that game and you aint getting a bye.

I understand how it’s set up now.
It’s just a guess on my part how it will be changed.
Being 3rd might be better than playing in the conference champ game and losing.
if they remove the champ games. Go 16 and no byes. Being 3rd gains no benefit over 2. As far as resting your players or losing a guy to injury.
Also depending on how the conferences shake out and finally settle. Should be designated playoff position for maybe the top 10-12 spots that keep the better teams of each conference from playing same conference games in the first round so those home games are equally distributed. Then after that, they go to neutral spots.

bullshite! Alabama beat the dogshit out of Georgia in the 2021 SECCG, and all that happened was we lost one of our best WRs in that game, and then had to play Georgia AGAIN two games later, and all anyone cares about is that Georgia won the second game.
It means absolutely nothing

The OP has a victim mentality. Hedging already and the season hasn't even started. I get it though, Bama has always struggled to get into the playoffs.

Doesn't all sports have a conference championship game? Even sports with larger playoff tournaments?

I guess your team should have worried about developing depth than having spotlight offensive guys with big time numbers.
But yes, I think eventually the CGs will be eliminated if the playoffs generate good money. And maybe the playoffs go to 16 with no byes and top 8 get a home game.

2. The #3 ranked SEC team will likely already have a playoff spot secured and gets to sit home with no risk of hurting their seed or getting players injured.
