Keep the conference championship game.

Make the first week in December week 9 of the SEC conference play.

Once the 2 teams are determined for the SECCG, pair off the rest of the schools for an extra game.

If you've been to the SECCG, there is a high likelihood that you enjoyed the game.
Keep that super bowl feel for the most important conference game of the year.

But get the other teams involved for that oh so precious 9th game.

So we have to arbitrarily decide a champion for the bye week anyway? That doesn’t sound like a possible disaster at all.

They'd have to get rid of the 'top 4 P5 conference champions get the #1-4 seeds' if they got rid of conference championship games.

Otherwise, we might have two 8-0 (9-0) or 7-1 (8-1) teams that didn't play each other. Who is the conference winner?

Your school is on the decline. I don’t think you Bama fans should be worrying yourselves with talk of playoffs and championships.

Yup, expand playoff… expand conference… remove divisions & equitable conference scheduling.

1. Guarantee there will be some really stupid tie breaks

2. You’d want your team to lose that tie break, because 3rd place regular season finish is the spot to covet…

(you are still in the field of 12 at that point, but you don’t have to play a pointless extra game against a physical opponent… also a decent chance you leapfrog someone by doing nothing if it’s the #2 team that loses CCG)

3. Chance of rematches so incredibly high… higher than ever before. Already was going to be high with an SEC-heavy playoff field of 12.

I mean you know the top 3 are in, probably the top 4, add a game between your top two right before lol?

The worst kind of football rematch is when they’re stacked in the postseason like CCG to playoff.

You play each other once in September & again in December? Fine, December winner takes it all.

But you split games in Dec/Jan? Feels more like there should be a rubber match — kind of a fkn mockery of sport to just reward whoever wins the “week later” game.

If I’m a player, CCG is opt out city. If I’m a coach, I’m encouraging it.

There’s only been like 5 times where it was a true sec championship. Most games have been between a team that should be there vs like the 3rd or 4th place finisher in the sec. 2013 auburn played mizzou. I think mizzou is listed officially as finishing 4th in the sec that season. Last season LSU officially finished behind Alabama in the final sec standings as they lost the seccg. A true seccg last year would have been UGA vs Tennessee. In 1999 it wouldn’t have been Bama vs Florida but Florida vs Tennessee.
At least they are getting one vs two in the game as it should be.
Yes, the seccg is an outdated relic that fit with the bowl tie in system but should have ALWAYS been the actual best two teams in the league and very seldom was.

Sounds familiar. Where have we seen this before?

If you thought this was bad last year, imagine it in the expanded playoff era. 9-3 LSU last year was out of the playoffs but had a shot to play their way in with a UGA win. In the future that scenario would be a 9-3 LSU team currently in the playoffs but out after a UGA loss while 10-2 Alabama is in.

??
I’ll bet you started watching football around the 2000’s. Never saw a group of fans happier with 4 losses. As UGA showed your school last year, maybe you shouldn’t worry about it.

Not sure on the #3 SEC team being a lock most years. With only an 8 game SEC schedule a 9-3 team wont be locked into a 12 team playoff with the other 10-2 teams out there. Just a quick review of the CFB rankings show 10-3 with a conference championship game appearance (win or loss) is much more likely to be in the final top 12 in the pre-bowl CFP rankings than a 9-3 team. Also some years I think there was only 2-3 teams that went 9-3 or better in the SEC and the TX and OK additions will make that harder. I think it will be rare for the SEC to get more than 3 teams in the playoff with TX and OK joining.

nah tennessee would have a rematch against UGA and maybe all three of bama, UGA, and tennessee make it if tennessee wins.

So the literal definition of a meaningless game.

Imagine if the NFL played scrimmage games with their top teams right after the regular season and before the playoffs just to make extra cash. Thats pretty much the SEC title game now.

The title game was going to suck regardless with an expanded playoff but with divisions you might occasionally get a 3 or 4 loss team in the game who is playing for a playoff spot.
