9 makes sense and with the Playoff Committee finally acknowledging strength of schedule as a determining metric going forward, we will see this occur. It's better for the sport, it's better for the fans, and maybe one day we can finally get away from these terrible non-conference games as well.

I don’t know how fans are mad they get to see their team against another conference team versus an FCS opponent in November

Alabama-UGA History

Ala. - 44
UGA - 26
Tie - 4

Alabama-Vandy History

Ala. - 63
Vandy - 19
Tie - 4

We've played them LESS but won MORE.

That game WAS SCHEDULED for 2024, but y'all & Ok. were added last year stopping the rotation.
Why it WASN'T still scheduled, ...

Stay at 8 until Clemson and FSU grow a pair and join the SEC.

The permanent opponent pairings that came out a couple of years ago were based upon trying to balance these out to some extent. They took everyone's conference record over the preceding 10 years (for OU and Texas, it was their Big XII record), then split the league into a top 8 and bottom 8. If you were in the top 8, you played two other top 8 teams and one bottom 8. If you were in the bottom, it was the opposite.

Because UT ended up just below the line for the top 8, that allowed them to qualify as Bama's sole bottom 8 opponent, and for Auburn and UT to be the top 8 opponents, when, based on history, one would have expected Auburn, UT, and State (MSU and Bama being the two closest SEC campuses). Saban blew a gasket, and switched from supporting a 9 game schedule to opposing it.

Frankly, I think trying to balance things out is stupid, both for practical reasons and sheer math. Let's take UT: so what if they end up with Bama, Vandy, and UK? That just means that their rotating opponents will be stronger--more Bama, Florida, Georiga, etc, on the rotating schedule. When you look at the math, the difference is probably down near being a rounding error.

And, if you are committed to balancing it out, how often are you going to be revisiting this issue? Let's just get the best historical matchups and not worry about trying to balance that out.

No chance you get Vanderbilt and Kentucky.

Vandy and UK are both rivalry games for the vols.

Do they win more often than not? Yeah. Doesn't change what the game is.

Would much rather have them and vandy on our schedule than other conference members, simply because it is who we've always played and taking that away is just another thing that detracts from the season.

Grow a pair. Neyland wasn't scared.

So it was supposed to be played twice in 12 years?

I didn't hear all of that. I remember they were talking about the last 10 years as a measuring point, therefore putting Aub & LSU as their "2 Top 8" opponents with Tenn. as the "1 Lower 8" opponent...which got many confused since Alabama already played those 3 yearly.

Yes. Under the old schedule, you played one team from the other division every year (some of those were historic matchups, others were just forced) and then rotated the other six, so it took 12 years to make the complete cycle (and we hadn't started on that until 2014).

Exactly. IDGAF if Tennessee beats us another 30 yrs in a row. We hate each other and I couldn't care less about playing the other schools annually. That game matters.

disagree. It makes schedules even more imbalanced with unequal road and home conference games.

it also dissuades teams from playing power 4 OOC games. So I hope we enjoy just playing conference games.

Completely disagree. It incentivizes a tougher OOC schedule. Think of it much like March Madness. I'd like to see all power 4 conferences freeze out everyone in the OOC and only schedule each other. If all teams adopt this model the college football product becomes the best it can possibly be with each week featuring meaningful opponents. Gone will be the crap teams and instead matchups of SEC/Big 10/Big 12/ACC opponents week in, week out.

This ×1000. Also, those with weaker permanents will end up with stronger rotating so it will all somewhat even out.

Good. Get rid of that cupcake in November. It doesn't matter if you lose a tough game here or there anymore. Perfection is no longer required. Just make the playoffs and win it. The whole system is changed.

What I would like to see done with that cupcake game is Alabama renew either the Georgia Tech or Penn State rivalry on a permanent basis.

OU would run to the bank with Mizzou, Arkansas and Texas. They would beat Arkansas and Mizzou 9 out of 10 times and Texas probably 7
