My ancestors owned slaves. Had a sugar plantation outside New Orleans and several riverboats. I still have a copy of the bill of sale when they were purchased with the whole list of names, their job title, and physical condition. The plantation house is still there as a tourist attraction but the family lost the wealth and land in the war. The owner of that plantation had a nephew in Baton Rouge that had a cotton plantation there. The cotton plantation was seized during the war and later the land granted by the state of Louisiana to build Louisiana State University. Fun history of the day
