You mean guys like Saban when he came to LSU?

For every Saban, there are 30 that failed.

Agree with this. Call their agent’s fricking bluff. At some point it has to happen

Do you know what $7 million dollars a year would get you in the SEC this year?

Clark Lea, Jeff Lebby, Hugh Freeze, Sam Pittman, and Mike Elko. Those are the only guys who had a salary this season of $7 million or less. Pittman is gone. Freeze may be joining him soon. And Lebby made one of the most boneheaded decisions of the season on Saturday night and cost his team a win. To a guy who just got fired. Elko will likely get paid by TAM in the off season. Lea will have the opportunity to coach somewhere other than Vandy if he wants to. Either way he is getting a raise.

Napier (RIP), Venables, Beamer and Stoops all had salaries over $7 million. Stoops is $9 million. For Mark Stoops.

Today, an AD knows he will be paying $6 million to hire anybody. If they have a guy they think will really be successful, why would they not pay $4 million more to gat him instead of a 6-6 coach?

This seems awkward coming from a Georgia fan considering Kirby Smart is the highest paid coach in college football ($13,000,000/year) AND has the highest buyout ($118,000,000)

Next thing you know, you're going .500 and $10 mil a year doesn't look that bad.

Saban was the exception but somehow became the rule.
That might be the only decent thing you've ever posted on TD.

If I were negotiating with a coach there would have to be some goals he would have to hit for his pay to be guaranteed.

And no good coaches would go to work for you. Why would they when they could get more money for fewer expectations and less pressure and stress?
It all sounds good in theory, but unless everybody else went along with it, you would either cave or get fired yourself for hiring less capable coaches.

If im an AD, I think I could be competent enough to let a coach walk and get a good coach to replace him.

Can you name three schools that have had back-to-back great coaches?

People think it is easy to land competent coaches, but there are more Florida's and Auburn's wandering around in the wilderness than schools with continued success. (No offense Florida and Auburn)

Kirby has won two national championships.

Contrast that to James Franklin who hasn’t won anything of note. There were plenty of coaches who could have gotten the same results at PSU for less money.

Great coaches is tough to define because there are so few "great" coaches. Good coaches that were good fits for their program there are plenty. Memphis, Tulane, App State, Bama, LSU, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Miss State, Georgia, Miami, Liberty

Damn, if Elko wins the whole enchilada he will make more than $17M this year. That is how you write a contract

The problem is Athletic Directors. The same carousel of coaches just ride the merry-go-round and take turns shaking down stupid schools before moving on to the next.

In 2000, three coaches made $1 million+...Bowden, Spurrier and Saban. The Saban Dynasty made every AD become obsessed with finding the "next Saban"...and agents took full advantage of the desperation...creating absolutely ridiculous contract "norms"...which was the genesis of paying players millions today because of the optics of the multimillionaire coaches vs poor, starving players narrative.

The inflation we have seen is insane. Had no idea it was that recent that coaches barely made $1 million.

It’s not only the ADs ,it’s also the whole administration who have to okay the hire.ADs don’t make these decisions on their own.

Adam Smith is to blame.

Well, not really. He just wrote about the cause.
