The problem with 16 teams

The CCG will consist of:
* one team that belongs there
* another team that backed in through a weak schedule
The true #2, #3, and #4 in the SEC won’t make it.
It will be a game between the best and then maybe the fifth or sixth best, rankings be damned.

You're right, the four most recent additions should do the right thing and leave

If you ask my opinion the team that wins the last game of the playoffs will be the champion.

So it will be like every other sport in the universe where playoffs are determined by clearly defined parameters rather than beauty contests?

16 teams would kill conference title games.

He’s talking about 16 teams being in the SEC.

Are you talking about yourself here?

Which is why you add an extra game to power your sample size.

This “problem” has existed for years. The SEC East was weak from 2010 till 2021. It was Georgia or Florida and everyone else while the west had at least 3-4 solid teams each year. Bama, LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss, Miss St., and Texas A&M were all top 5 teams at one point during that period. The East had several 3-loss champs.

No. The SEC has no structure. Other sports do. The SEC is a 16 pile-up where not everybody can play an even schedule. And so this is what you’ll get. Just wait and see who falls into that game and manstomped by UGA.

12 is worse. Now that Alabama "My Team" looks likely to lose a game or two each year, I still would like them in a playoff if they're worthy.

It does appear the OP is trolling himself.

Unless somehow the 2 highest ranks teams in the SEC get in, it won't really be a championship game.
Otherwise, it's just a small league tourney. 2 team tourney championship, that's it.

I've seen chatter online about the SEC working on getting back to divisions, in talks.
I hope they do.
The NFL has 32 teams and two conferences with 8 total divisions.
The SEC has 16 teams in 1 conference with zero divisions.
It is asinine.

Any more than 12 absolutely waters down the playoffs, and I still maintain 8 is the perfect number.
Of course now that they've gone to 12 they won't ever drop to 8, and the pressure (once the accounting dept runs the numbers) to expand further will come very soon.
Expanding to 16, 18 or god forbid 20 will have the same effect the playoffs themselves have had on the traditional bowl system. Not only will it make the playoffs less of an accomplishment, you could also see draft worthy players on teams that get in the playoffs yet have no realistic shot at winning their matchup actually sit out. Yes, I know how crazy that sounds, but you would have called me crazy 30 years ago if I said "some players will choose to not play in the Sugar Bowl, Rose Bowl etc and save their bodies for the NFL"
Honestly though, in any given season are there TRULY more than 8 teams that have a body of work (w/l records + sos) that make them playoff worthy? Yes, the 12 team playoff makes it possible for the service academies and maybe once a decade super dark horse to get in, but going above 12 would be a mistake imo.

Where would Bama be right now if they played A&M’s schedule? Undefeated, that’s where.
We can’t have disparity of schedules elevating some teams and pushing good teams down.
Who here thinks A&M has a hope in hell to beat Bama? Why not, they’re #1 right?
What a farce.

Any not? The NFL does and the SEC is NFL light.
