You dont hear anyone defending the treatment of african americans in either the north or south during that time.
You can listen to all the history written in the northeast you want, but Lincoln was not sending troops to fight and die in the south as long as the taxes were paid.

You do realize that Ohio was the stronghold of the Copperheads(Democratic Party) who were against Emancipation, Civil War, conscription, and wanted to let the South go on their way. That their leader, Vallandigham from Ohio, pushed a campaign with northern democrats to sue the south for peace instead of going to war with them.
By the way Vallandigham was tried for Treason by Lincoln.
