Here's a gif. Humphrey grabs the receiver. Not sure if that's allowed st that distance or not.

The receiver dives at his legs/falls at his legs. No way to know if it's intentional or not. I guess you could look at how they ran the play at other times during the year.

Either way, until they call it, seems like a great strategy to me.

The article states because either bama initiated or it mutual initiation was the reason for the no call. intent does not matter

It's within one yard of the LOS and almost simultaneous with the ball being thrown. Very difficult rule to officiate.

When you look at that GIF, you could make a claim that the Alabama defender knew this was going to leave Renfrow Open and perhaps he grabbed the Clemson receiver to make the pick look more obvious to draw a flag...

You could also say that the Clemson WR was really trying to get to #2 and Humphrey recognized it and tried to stop him before he could get in #2's way.

Honestly I thought there were a couple of these rub/pick routes that Clemson ran earlier in the game that maybe should have been called but this play is 100% legal.

Clemson ran an illegal pick play, but the play ended up being perfectly legal from their standpoint.

This. The intended playcall was illegal, but Clemson got a free pass because Humphrey initiated contact at the same time as the Clemson receiver. So therefore the illegal playcall became legal. Even if Humphrey did not initiate, it still would have likely never been called in that situation. Good playcall by Clemson.

Are bama fans seriously still whining 8 months later because they couldn't stop a legal pick play?

When the Refs didn't call a flag on the identical play where Clemson scored (The TE put his arms up like he was reaching for the ball) should have been a signal to Bama that the Ref's were not going to call this later if it came up....At least the ref's were consistent.

Breaking down the play, Gallman being sent in motion tipped Deshaun that Bama was in man. The game was over at that point. The only way the play is close to being considered a pick is if #2 for Bama ran into anyone, but he chose to run around them. Making the play perfectly legal. And that's without mentioning the bama corner grabbed Scott for Clemson. Pruitt sitting in man was pretty dumb, out coached and out schemed in the end.

If Bama's DBs would have tackled ever WR sent out, would it have forced Clemson to kick a FG with its extra play ? Then they could have at least a chance to win in OT.

This one is a big deal to some because it was the last play of a NC and it was pretty egregious.

Dre called out our coaching staff. Combo/switch coverage ftw.

The DB initiated the contact, but he only did so because he clearly realized the play about .5 seconds too late and was trying to fight back across the receiver. Receiver turned himself into a roadblock when he felt the contact.

What really made the play work was Renfrow took a perfect angle and ducked inside of the other receiver at the last second. Would've been very easy (especially at that short distance) to misjudge by half a step and crash into him and the play dies. (Unless Deshaun finds a way to run it in, which he may have.)

Game of inches folks. Illegal? Probably. Does that ever get called? Very rarely. And the flag's not coming out in that situation because nobody wants to be the OSU-Miami ref again.

You seem pretty dumb. OP is an LSU fan, the vast majority of bama fans on this board just kind of shrugged this one off. Speaking of LSU, we can all agree that is a good thing they didn't lose an NC on a play(s) like this one. I can't even imagine the all encompassing meltdown that would ensue.

What was egregious about it? the receiver never initiated contact. He roadblocked two of your defenders and left Renfroe all alone. It was genius.

I have no problem with the play, when it's run cleanly.

The issue is that the refs miss illegal picks on it very frequently. Nothing wrong with bringing attention to that so that refs may call it better in the future.

Clemson actually ran it twice against us scoring both times. The first time it was pretty clean, the second time not so much.

Nobody sane cares much about that last play. The game was lost by our offense being unable to get first downs and sustain drives, leaving our defense on the field the entire game. That was the core issue.

Yawn...

If the offense could have moved the ball without Bo to get a couple more first downs and/or the D could have stepped up to keep Clemson from driving the field, a pick play wouldn't have mattered.

It was a great game. Disappointing?, yes.
But, still a great game.
Better team won.

I wouldn't necessarily call them the better team, not sure who would have won say a best of 7 series, but they played a much better, more complete game than us that night and they won, that's usually how it works.
