I mean Mitch Mustain won alot of games as a freshman at arkansas then transferred because he thought he was better than he was and noone ever heard from him again.

I always thought one of the reasons Mitch Mustain may have transferred to to USC was so he could be as far away from his mother as possible.

The best SEC backfield I have ever seen is Arkansas 2007. You should have won 10 games that year. Betty White and QB could have won 6-7 games. Amazes me how Nutt found a way to screw that team up. I bet that Ali Highsmith still has nightmares trying to decide whether to play the jet sweep outside in or the power inside out.

Arkansas should have won the SEC in either 2006 or 2007. If Nutt just for once swallowed his pride, handed over the playcalling over to an OC and hired a QB coach then he wouldn't have gotten fired.

He inherited Clint Stoerner from the Danny Ford years and for the next eight years never developed competent QB play. Matt Jones came and saved him from a possible earlier firing not by his arm but his legs.

Watching Nutt offenses was hard on the eyes and the playcalling was very predictable but his ego would never allow him to give it up and thus ruined one opportunity after another.

No doubt.

But for 10 straight years, Nutt always followed his first SEC loss with another SEC loss. And with that backfield, he finished the 2006 season with 2 SEC losses and a bowl loss. Then he lost the first 3 SEC games of 2007.

The Mustain story was always confusing to me from the outside. I’ve enjoyed hearing the Arkansas fans explain it.

With the best RB trio ever, plus the #1 QB in America, it’s amazing that it fell apart.

From the comments it was a combo of:
Over-rated QB bc of HS offense
HS coach riding coattails to get college job (we didn’t realize he was actually that talented at the time).
Nutt being a controlling narcissist and resenting the new coach and his QB.

It’s still fascinating to me.

I'll be roasted, but let me tell you something. Mustain was a legendary HS kid. But he wasn't special in College. Literally did nothing at USC. Potential? Yes. At the highest level? No.

That 2006 game at Auburn sucked and you could tell that offense was all Gus Malzahn from the stands with the benefit of hindsight. Even ran the little psuedo fumblerooski with tiny little Reggie Fish carrying the ball.

HDN's ego wasted the opportunity for a great season. Absolute clown. Should have let his coordinator do his thing.

I think Mustain was burned out at Arkansas and just gave up at USC. He really wanted to succeed at Arkansas but the Nutt and Malzahn feud destroyed that.

Was he overrated? Anyone could make an argument for that. But anyone with eyes that can see and an unbiased opinion would understand that Mustain had higher potential than Casey Dick.
