Tommy Tubberville says he should be a serious Heisman contender fwiw. When a coach praises a quarterback I tend to think there’s something there that media and fans might miss.

I'll tell you more. He is one of the few Bama players that wont even be a thought in the mind of NFL scouts to be drafted at the position he plays......

He is a good college football player, he is not a good Qb. There is nothing wrong with that and that shouldnt offend you

He's a poor man's Johnny Manziel or a rich man's Jordan Jefferson. (bit of hyperbole)

He won't blow you away with his passing, but he gets the job done and if you don't keep him contained he can burn you with his legs.

On a team as talented as Bama's, he's got the right tools to keep them in every game. The only teams that he'll struggle with are the teams that can play tight man coverage and keep him contained at the LOS. Those teams will still have to be able to score on the Bama defense to win. So far the only team to do that was Clemson.

He could be inconsistent and had his fair share of limitations but he was a much better QB than Hurts, Coker, McElroy, Wilson, etc..

I love Sims more than just about anyone but the Jake Coker of the last 5 games of 2015 was as good as any Alabama QB in the last 30 years.

87/120 (73%)
9.66 YPA
9 TD/0 INT

And all against Auburn, Florida, Michigan State and Clemson (and Charleston Southern).

No, he's a poor man's Josh Dobbs. Great runner with the same limitations throwing the football.

63% Career passing is now mediocre...? Boy the bar keeps getting pushed further and further back. When he completed 4 straight passes and a TD in the 3rd qt Saturday the silence was blaring.. the kid can literally do no right.. This is just hilarious to watch. He has 1 int and he sucks lmbo

He is a mediocre passer - just looking at completion percentage doesn't tell the whole story. He is also one of the best runners i've ever seen at the position and, thus far this season, doesn't turn the ball over. That combined makes him a very good, nearly great, college qb. Still can improve and if he does improve in his mid-range passing, ball placement, etc. he will be close to unstoppable.

As an LSU fan, I felt more nervous about the following bama qbs recently:

Coker, Sims, and AJ

Hurts is only better than McElroy and Wilson in the Saban era IMHO. I like the fact that our defensive coordinator can somewhat rip 1/3 of his playsheet out and not have to worry about it when Hurts is the qb

The thing with Jalen is, he isn't going to do stupid things like Blake and Coker were prone too. He's also liable to beat anybody for 40 yards with his feet at any time.

He is what he is.

he's not a bad qb by any stretch but he's not a very good passer, I mean that's just the truth. however, like most Bama players, he doesn't make a lot of mistakes either so while it does limit Bama's offense to a degree, he doesn't put y'all in bad spots either, and he's not so bad that he can't make a throw when it's there to be made.

To me AJ was the best QB i have ever seen at Bama and one of the more underrated college QBs of my lifetime. The rest y'all have had have been more than good enough to win games and I put Hurts in that group as well.

I agree with that. Put him on last season's UT team and they'd have had about the same results.

I don't think he's a "poor man's" Josh Dobbs, though. He is Josh Dobbs. Their strengths/weaknesses are almost identical. Both on the field and off. Their stats, if you take out the "plays for Alabama" bump, are almost identical as well. Pretty decent passers inside 20 yards. Running backs run wise who can run physical and run away from you. Poor passers down the field. Will have 3-4 throws a game that just make you scratch your head. Great leaders who everyone likes and respect.

It's really by far the best comparison I can think of from the last 10 years or so.

He's not "bad". He's mediocre. His stats and average QBR bear that out.

Not unlike basically every one of your quarterbacks since Stabler, Hurts looks better than he is because his supporting cast is so good.

You've found the key to making bad QBs look solid and mediocre QBs looks good. That's more of a compliment to your program as a whole than an indictment on Hurts.

Except for that whole running for 600 yards and 6 TDs thing in addition to his passing.

So he's a good RB and a mediocre QB.

So, to sum up the Rant's opinion, he's average like every other starting QB in the SEC, excepting the perennial hot rod QB at Georgia.
