Kevin Garnett as a South Carolina NBA guy? What? Garnett never went to college.

The tourney is all that should really matter for this discussion.
NBA doesn't matter, imo.
Conference Championships don't really matter either, imo.
I feel confident I made some errors in this calculation, but this should be pretty close to the right rankings..
TLDR
We are all living in Kentucky's playground.

Historically ? Yes, I am confident in my statement that Kentucky has been the best men's basketball program in the SEC. By a long shot.
Today ? They're behind 'Bama, Auburn, Tenner, and Florida. Not just because of this year - but because that's been the trend for the last four years.
Pope has work to do, just to get Kentucky into the mix of those top programs. And nobody is going to strangle-hold this conference in the near future.

Sure, some teams will rise up and be the cool kid for 5, maybe 10 years, but over the next 50-100 years, you're still Kentucky and you'll still be the king of basketball in this conference.

Dunno'. The Cats have always had rivals. Nolan had Arkansas as good or better for a bit. Billy Donovan had it locked up for a couple years. Dale Brown was always formidable. 'Bama had runs, Georgia had The Tubb, 'Tenner supports their basketball, you get it.
But I've never seen Kentucky legit second tier, without a coaching change. That's what got Tubby run. That's where we are now. Can Pope bring them back ? I like the early indications.
This conference is getting really, really damn tough. I think Kentucky has to up their game to keep up. I'm very serious. Tradition only gets you so far. As Churchill said, tradition is just rum, sodomy, and the lash.

How does South Carolina get credit for Kevin Garnett?
Posted on 3/25/25 at 5:11 pm to TailbackU
Even if Garnett had qualified for college, his recruitment was between Maryland/UNC/Michigan and he’s gone on record saying he’d have gone to Maryland. Also OP leaves out ABA stats which are now officially included as part of the NBA record book

KG was born in that state so it instantly made the university there better.

You are giving significant points to Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas for winning a combined 83 regular season conference titles and 28 conference tournament titles. The problem is those four have almost no SEC titles. The four have combined for 2 regular season SEC titles and 1 SEC tournament title, all by Arkansas.

Oklahoma does not belong on this list with 0 titles. What is this, little league participation accolades?

How is that a problem exactly?

Garnett used to come to our basketball court when he was like 10 - 14. He always wanted to play with the old guys. Get off our lawn young kid. Few years later, he’s 6’9 swatting shots off the backboard.

You are giving the same credit to teams for very different levels of accomplishment. Do you think Texas would have won 28 conference titles if they had been in the same conference with Kentucky every year? Of course not.
And he is vastly inflating points gifted for regular season conference titles.
He shows the 16 teams listed have won a combined 211 conference titles worth 15 points each. The SEC has only existed for 93 years.

This thread is a total joke. Shut it down mods.

I think the comparisons between UF and Arkansas is a good discussion. Gators with 2 titles, 1 runner up and 2 other final 4s. Versus Arkansas’ 1 title and 5 final 4s. Arky has a better longer tourney history but UF has a better winning it all record.

We have one runner up as well
