I think a lot of us at least partially agree with what Brian Kelly is saying, but saying this publicly doesn’t do his program any favors.

I don't think it's a negative.
He's essentially saying players need to want to come to LSU because they're going to be developed and to win championships, not because they want a lot of NIL money.
Kirby and Saban have said similar things, they just didn't go as far as Kelly.
You may lose the focus of those players who are looking for a big payday but those players rarely work out anyway.

He echoed many of the same sentiments that are posted on this board daily, he stated that LSU is not interested in players who are simply looking for a fat paycheck.
quote:
"We were in the market in recruiting in the transfer portal, looking for defensive linemen," Kelly said, according to WAFB's 9 Jacques Doucet. "It hasn't fared very well, quite frankly. Because we're selling something a little differently and that is: We want to recruit, we want to engage, build relationships, develop, retain, and have success.
"We're not in the market of buying players. And unfortunately, right now, that's what some guys are looking for. They want to be bought."
quote:
if you're just looking to get paid, you're looking in the wrong place," Kelly said.
The board blasts him for having the same opinions they do.
I think you grossly misunderstand the opinion of the board. The opinion of the board is that NIL and the transfer portal are ruining college sports. They have no problem with their school engaging in the practice as needed.
Kelly saying that was a stupid thing to do and will hurt his recruiting efforts. He may have said it because LSU actually has a limited NIL budget and can't afford anyone else right now.

Yes it is. LSU is buying every player than can afford. Meanwhile, your coach is up there pretending like "We don't buy players" as an excuse for the ones you lose due to being outbid.

He's saying they aren't recruiting players out of the portal who are simply looking to go to the highest bidder.
How is he "full of shite" regarding that?

Seriously, are you 12 years old? Do I really need to explain it to you? I will, even if you're a troll.
A vast majority of the top recruits - both high school and transfer - are presently expecting financial compensation. If Kelly is dumb enough to publicly state they're not buying players, then there are a ton of players that won't even consider making a recruiting visit to LSU, which, if you're not buying players, provides LSU's best selling points (facilities, tradition, fan support). I can see recruits giving up some compensation for other benefits and/or a great playing environment. But you have to get them to campus first and then hope, when you make lower financial offer, the kid says, "You know what, I really like what I saw at LSU. I'll go play there for less money because it looks like a great place to play football." But Kelly isn't even giving himself a chance to make an impression before the financial negotiation takes place.
That's how.

He isn't wrong. We can agree with him in principle and still acknowledge it isn't exactly a winning strategy.
Best of luck to yall LSU folks.

So they are paying players. There are some transfer kids that are just looking to go to the highest bidder.
So that sounds more like they got outbid and stopped recruiting at that point.

Don't be dense. The players and their families are having conversations with the coaches who are recruiting them that are entirely different than what Brian Kelly or a Nick Saban say publicly. This is Kelly trying to get out in front of fan criticism over failing to sign a DT in the spring portal. Perception vs. reality.

I have to question the intelligence of this board then.

He didn't say they won't pay players, he said he doesn't want players who are basing their entire decision on money.

I am against killing. I am against getting shot at it
However, I sure hope I don’t hope to hear those statements echoed by our military general during war

Because LSU is still making bids, they just aren't the highest. You don't make bids and then claim you don't "buy players" just because you were outbid.
He's full of shite. He's perfectly fine when LSU wins the bid and LSU is certainly putting in bids. He even says so himself talking about the "NIL around BR".

Every coach does say that. Which is why this is a non-issue, unless you're a rantard who can't wait to instantly blow his load all over the internet over a tweet about Brian Kelly.

Saying it and meaning it are 2 different things, though.
When LSU offers an NIL package, do they ever raise it in negotiation?
If they do, then he is full of shite.
