It just seems kind of sacrilegious for somebody to pray about a game. Like it's wasting God's time or something.

Oh, ok. I get it now why he's so invested in this topic.

So if I pray good enough God might favor my team, in spite of the fact that you're praying good for your team too.

We can pray all we want but God may not answer in the way we desire. We should pray that God's will, not ours, be done, in whatever we petition Him with.

God, I pray that your will, which is Clemson playing mistake-free football, be done. Amen.

so that Clemson fan is going to pray that God's will be something that pleases him, the Clemson fan. I'm pretty sure the Georgia fan probably prayed something similar, judging by his comments in this thread. So did God favor UGA in that game?

quote:
God’s will in regard to small matters in this world is His business, not mine.
He told us “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”
Based on that, I know there are simply things that I should not pray for. We are not supposed to pray for things of the world. Joel Osteen would disagree because that truth would put his arse out of business.
HRV - FWIW, I'm impressed.
Like you, God's will in regard to small matters is His business.
We'll never know for sure, but I believe two things are very possible:
1. Ed Orgerson's downfall was triggered by his decision to break the sacred bond of marriage and subsequent carousing and fornicating lifestyle.
2. LSU's relationship with a gambling empire does not sit well with God. He may not specifically bless a program, but he surely might curse it.

Or, you know, just maybe, LSU lost a lot of great players and coaches and didn't replace them?

Or, uh, things like 17 players out and unable to field a team for practice. Losing your $10M/year job less than 2 years removed from a national championship. Barely appearing in the the rankings this year. I'll stop there, but there's more.

Are you saying these things occurred because Ed O got a divorce?

I could say the same of people seemingly offended by prayer in a public forum.
And I still can't see where they prayed for the team to win or play better. the closest was praying that the team members and coaches perform to the best of their abilities.
If I'm about to fix my car, or teach one of my kids something, am I in the wrong for praying that it goes the best it can, and that I do the best I am capable of? It is insignificant to my creator if my car is fixed.
People used to pray publicly, and together, about a lot of things. The current receding of religion makes it seem weird, I guess.

God's will is whatever He ordains to happen; that which most glorifies Himself. We aren't dictating to Him what His will is.

A lot of seemingly random or arbitrary things happen all that time that have profound impacts on the lives of many people. We just aren't privy to those things most of the time.

Explain this from the lens of a tragedy that occurs as a result of sin.

As long as you’d dig your heels in defending someone praying on a public forum about their Netflix selection, I don’t have anything to argue with you about. It’s bizarre, but I won’t tell you you’re wrong.

I'm saying it's possible that God removed the blessings he bestowed on Coach Orgeron because of his decision to break the bonds of matrimony and further dishonor God with his inappropriate behavior. Only God Himself knows it that happened, but I know this: "For the LORD disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.” - Hebrews 12:6. I've been on the receiving end plenty.

I see you skipped my response
we are not supposed to care about worldly things, so that would also mean we aren't supposed to pray to God for the success of worldly things
