Programs are looking for an answer. There are only 3 head coaches in the FBS that have won championships, with 1 being in the tail end of his career. If your barometer for “who should we hire?” is “Has won a national championship as a head coach”, no one would ever get hired.

What about play for conference championship?
Playoff appearances?
Record against top 10?

Surely there are other metrics.....

So teams just have to target Kirby every year then and hire no one else. Got it.

Then explain it. Any coach who is good in those metrics you posted outside of maybe conference championships (which Kiffin has) will stay at their program. Top 10 teams, famously, don’t lose. Playoff appearances were limited to 4 teams before now, essentially all blue bloods each year outside of some outliers who would get demolished, and has only just now been expanded.

The schools ADs and Boards keep hiring the same guys like Kiffin, Reily, etc. because of their idiot fan bases who would destroy them if it’s not Gruden, Saban, Kiffin, etc.. There are handfuls of young coordinators in college football who would/ could run schematic circles around these re-treads if given a shot. But they don’t get a shot because of idiot fan bases. Much like the music industry where there are far greater musicians, singers, bands that never get the break than the ones who become popular. Coaching in big time college football is nothing more than a popularity contest. Instead of paying a clown like Kiffin 13m a year, UF and LSU would be better off getting a badass mid 30s guy who has the right stuff and paying 4-5m and dumping that other 7m into getting him the players he needs to build and win. But they don’t and go the lazy route to appease their idiot fans.

uf always tries to hire the “up and comer” type and it rarely works out.

Only urban did the rest failed

That's not a slam against Ole Miss,I am realistic ,I know we do not have the resources like LSU, A&M, or Bama etc..it's weird that some coaches win at one place but fail at others.. look at Riley at SC, hell outside of Pete Carroll USC has been very average. Freeze did great at at Ole Miss, (I think he was about to tank due to hiring Longo and McGriff as coordinators), but absolutely sucked at Auburn..some guys are for whatever reason better at 2nd tier programs.
I think Whittingham is great at Utah, don't think it would translate or that he would leave for LSU or Florida
It's also a culture for. I get why LSU hired Kelly originally but I think Dan Lanning,( if you could have gotten him )
would have been a better fit and won more.. definitely not an arse like Kelly right now too many openings and not a lot of proven coaches at a high level.
Kiffin may have developed Tennessee back to a top 10 team if had stayed. he's had 3 10 win seasons at Ole Miss
I don't think we have 10 wins this season if Austin Simmons doesn't get hurt. I prefer a mobile QB..not saying Simmons won't develop into a better QB next year, but this was supposed to be a rebuilding year at Ole Miss..I was thinking 8 wins not this level of success but whatever happens happens I'm just going to enjoy this year.. chaos is better than being Florida or Auburn right now knowing your at the bottom not going to a bowl

True.

There really does seem to be little rhyme or reason why one coach is good at one school, but sucks at another

He has accomplished less than Brian Kelly and is not even a young guy anymore

He is 2 years older than Nick Saban was when LSU hired him in 2000.

He is 6 years younger than Saban when Alabama hired him.

Riley inherited Oklahoma, which was still elite AF. Dude had Hollywood brown, cedee lamb, baker and mark Andrews on the same roster. USC can’t get close to that.

What did he win at Tennessee? What did he win at USC?

Dude is all sizzle and no steak. He talks a great game, is an amusing follow on social media and gives good interviews.

That's it. He has nothing to show for his efforts.

Your comment was that he has failed upwards. He's 10-1 and has Ole Miss on track for the playoffs. How is that failure?

You're right. He hasnt won the ultimate prize but that wasn't your original comment...

He stalls out at where he's taken OM, currently. He's a James Franklin-level HC.

Dude is winning but there are a ton of middle aged men from at least 3 schools with an unhealthy obsession over him at the moment
