The “Big 6” domination of SEC championships is a pretty incredible stat.

1963 Ole Miss was the last time anyone outside of Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Tennessee, Florida, or Georgia won the SEC. 60 years. Kentucky has that odd claim to a split of the 1976 title with UGA, but only due to the NCAA later vacating MSU’s win over them. Not to mention UGA dominating the head to head.

And all 6 of those teams have won national titles in the past 30 years.

I would expect we will soon have a Big 8 or possibly 9 with Texas, Oklahoma, and aTm all having the resources and recruiting to win a conference title.

A&M?

If they happen to one day buy a title before another implosion, that’s an anomaly—not a auto-ticket to the adult table.

Seriously, anm? They’ve been in the SEC for 12 years without so much as a divisional championship.

Aggy isn’t about to win anything.

the reality is that a conference title won’t mean as much moving forward.. good or bad, right or wrong, the new standard will be playoff appearances..

What are you 12? One of these is definitely not like the others.

You should jave just started a thread about potential.

I don’t want any part of the “Big Six” discussion, even if an SEC title is won. It will take a national title in the 12 team playoff format.

it will be a big 7 or a big 8 if aanm steps up because Florida is dead and finished as a program

would your rather make the playoffs for the next 10 years in a row..

or

win five SEC titles and miss the playoffs the other five years?

I suppose you can make the argument both ways because 5 titles would mean you were pretty good and perhaps had a better chance to win it all..

but like baseball, give me 10 straight CWS and 0 SEC titles instead of 5 straight SEC titles and missing Omaha 5 times..

You are right but it sucks. I can remember Spurrier saying when he dominated the SEC that Florida's goal every year was to win the SEC Title. It was the one championship that wasn't affected by politics.

anm was only marginally better in the Big12 as they only won the conference ONCE.

Teams that won the conference numerous times:

Oklahoma
Texas
KSU
BAYLOR
Nebraska

Teams who won as many as anm:

Colorado
Okie lite
TCU.

A big chunk of that time the sec was 10 teams and 12 teams.

Is half or 60% of a conference dominating that unusual?

Yes and no. You are right that not winning it won’t hurt as bad as long as you still make the playoffs. I think winning an SEC championship will keep its relevance though with a first round bye.

The game is starting to have much more parity. UGA losing in 2023 would have meant having to play a tough Ole Miss team. Oregon losing the Pac means they have to play a 50/50 game against Mizzou. In 2022 losing the SEC title knocked LSU all the way out of a 12 team playoff. Bama not making the game would have matched them against Caleb Williams and USC. Unless you draw the 5 seed against whatever random mid major they have to add, you are going to play a really tough close to 50/50 elimination game that you either lose or get physically beat up in, only to play a fresh top 4 team the following week who has been game prepping for you for several weeks.

Plus, in an expanded playoff its going to be more difficult for the SEC champ to win a national title or even to make it to the title game. So in those inevitable disappointments from an early playoff exit, it will be meaningful to have a trophy to show for it as the SEC champion.

I think we make a bigger deal about winning the conference than what you are used to

Domination in general, like winning 80-90% of the time? That is normal. But to never have an outsider strike gold and win it from time to time is a fairly extreme statistical anomaly. Every other major conference has had multiple instances of the bottom half of the conference occasionally winning. Teams like Oregon St, Illinois, Purdue, Wake Forest, Kansas.
