I can agree with this...I'd say though we can easily look at the guys we brought in and rate them against talent that was already on the team and contributors...

for instance we have a DL player that started as a true freshman and will only play now to give other players rest...:petrinodoinwork:

Jerry Franklin came in as about a 215lb freshman.

Jerry was recruited as a safety as well.

I'm still waiting for a response to my post earlier that showed that all of our current "stars" on defense that were listed were rated 5.6 or lower coming out of high school.

We're never going to have a top 3 defense like Alabama, LSU or Florida year in and year out but as long as we can stay at the 5-6 range and our offense keeps humming then we will keep competing at a high level.

This is the best LB recruiting class we have ever had here.

Robert Atiga 6'3" 240lbs
Tyler Gilbert 6'3" 248lbs
Brock Haman 6'3" 235lbs
Alonzo Highsmith 6'1" 230lbs
Darrell Kelly-Thomas 6'4" 228lbs

we'll see

how many games have they played in so far?

Can't speak for the rest but Haman started every game of his high school career so that's at least 30. I would imagine there were some playoff games as well. I don't know what age they start playing at in Arizona but you gotta think at least 3 seasons from 7-9th grade so that's another 30 games. I would imagine he alone has at least played 70 games before now.

What does seeing them in games have to do with knowing they are faster, stronger, and more knowledgeable than any other incoming class we have had?

How stupid are you people? These kids tested out a week and a half before fall camp started. We have never had a collective group of LB recruits this strong and fast.

Is this really that hard for you to grasp?

Haman was also part of a 37 game winning streak at his high school.

Obvious all-sec lock is obvious.

None of them are "Stars" though. Some are just solid players (Nelson, Tank) and others good (Bequette, Franklin, Thomas) but none really high NFL type-talents. Maybe Bequette here, but that's it. My point was if you ever wanted a good defense, you have to recruit better defensive players, especially for this recruiting class where Petrino is REALLY lacking. Not a single Hog fan in this thread can say they're concerned with defensive recruiting when it's staring them right in the face as being way off this year. You can't imagine how well a Nick Fairly or Patrick Peterson can seriously impact your defense.

Was he a star before last season?

I'm going out on a limb and say Robert Thomas will be this years Fairly

That's the thing, it's really no different than the past 4 years. 8 of our 11 starters on defense this year were 3*'s or lower and 18 of our 22 deep on defense were 3*'s or lower.

Like I said, if we can just hover around 5-6 in the defensive standings then we will be fine. We are NEVER going to have a year in and year out top tier defense at Arkansas. It aint going to happen.

Petrino's offensive recruiting has been very, very good since he has been here so as long as we do keep in the top 3 offenses year in and year out then we will be competitive with LSU, Alabama and Auburn. Not saying we are going to dominate but we will be competitive and competing for the West.

However, if we ever do have a season with a top 3 defense then can you imagine how good we would be?

I am not concerned over our defensive recruiting this year.

We brought in 16 defensive players a year ago. We had a need on the defensive side of the ball. This year, we have a need at WR and CB/S, then recruit for the best available.

What does this have to do with anything? It was only his second season at Auburn last year.

He's not even going to be a starter and suddenly he's the most dominant DT in the SEC? Small limb you're going out on there

Thomas is running with the 1's in practice.

The consensus around camp is that Thomas could very well be a starter. He is the biggest reason DD Jones has been getting more work at DE.

How do you know we don't have a guy that will come in and be dominant? I mean you knew Fairly would because he was a 5* right??

This is what I'm talking about, they cant even admit the defensive commits they have right now are nothing to get excited over about.

For those that don't know, half their class right now is still defensive commits.

Last I heard Jones and Jones were the starters, he hasn't supplanted either one yet. Maybe if you want count him as a "starter" in the 5-2 defense you guys are trying to arrange, but other than that, havent heard of him being a starter in the 4-2-5/4-3 hybrid base D.

Merely blindly guessing isn't anything to base anything on. No, not every 3* JUCO DT will come in and be a Nick Fairley. Sorry.

Much more objective about it than you guys are.
