A thought just occurred to me... Planes, Trains, Automobiles won't even make sense to a younger millennial because the whole plot centers around the fact there is no internet and no cell phones. Just two guys improvising their way home for the holidays with no technology.

I view it as an ensemble movie
Ramis is second banana but clearly Candy's character as Dewy Oxburger is stronger.
Look at the cast and look at their place today
Bill Murray (almost 90 credits)
Harold Ramis (roughly 40 credits - pretty good for a writer by profession)
Warren Oates (with about 125 credits and longtime character actor)
PJ Soles (over 60 credits but mostly B stuff)
Sean Young (over 120 credits including Rachel in Blade Runner)
John Candy (almost 70 credits before a death too young)
John Larroquette (with over 100 credits and best known for Night Court role)
Judge Reinhold (about 110 credits including Fast Times at Rigemont High)
Timothy Busfield (over 70 credits including Revenge of the Nerds)
Lots of secondary folks on that movie as well with pretty established cares as supporting actors and actresses.
While lots of other actors could have played most roles in the movie, only Murray and Candy made their characters so strong you can only see them playing the part.

I will have to watch this
Hard for kids today to fully comprehend just how big Lampoon was in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. I think for a few years it was in the Top 10 in subscriptions of the day. Pretty stout when other names on that list included Time, Newsweek, Reader's Digest, Ladies Home Journal?, and Playboy.

One of the more under appreciated scenes John Candy did Meet the Flintstones
So subtle and so simple on how you appeal to the masses by going with the lowest common denominator. It is how most politicians get elected and how most religious folks get to bypass real discussions outside their comfort zones.

Different age this set of younger folks.
Bill Hayley and Rock and Roll was my touchstone but I grew up listening to the earlier music of Big Bands and Evan earlier music in classical orchestral works. I also listed to the ragtime, blues, and jazz of the generation or two older than mine.
Kids under 30 have a hard time going back 5 years much less a generation or two and connecting to some of the great musical works in an age before them.

I disagree. Alot of them are into the 90's bands that I listened to in high school, similar to how I listened to the 60's rock bands at their age. It's all cyclical.
What is weird to me is realizing they look at Nirvana and Pearl Jam the way I look at Led Zeppelin or Cream... and I make the Jacksonville Jaguar fan disgusted face.

Kids I see are more the Katy Perry and Lady Gaga crowd and way too much Justin Beiber.
Glad some younger folks are at least getting Zep and Stones
Still, are they going even deeper to the classical roots or blues roots?
