No, Fulmer had some talent but at some point also knew what to do with it which is really the most important part

Butch Jones had more talent at Tennessee than Butch Jones had at any other job. Other poster said Leach would have had more talent at Tennessee than Leach had ever had

Possibly, but Butch wasnt as proven as Leach. Tennessee never had as much talent as their fans thought they did.

LOL

So he suggested letting Fulmer stand in for him while he was trying to hire a coach.

“I just tried to call again,” Currie wrote in a group message. “The plane I was on had broken WiFi. I am so sorry, I was going to communicate by email that Phillip (Fulmer) could stand in for me on the call and talk about coach D (Dave Doeren)."

Then he basically closes the deal with Leach, who would have been a very good hire, but Fulmer has already stabbed him in the back.

Davenport: “We need you to come back to Knoxville tonight.”

Currie: “What should I tell coach leach”

Davenport: “Tell him you have nothing more you can talk with him about.”

Leach's agent....

O’Hagan: “Thanks Matt, the people we worked with the past two days who are associated with the Vols search were professional and thorough. We negotiated earnestly and in good faith and feel we had reached and agreed to a deal.

So in Currie's absence, Fulmer went behind his back and with the support of his old UT fat cats, had the guy fired, reneged with Leach, and hired a fellow that has never been a head coach even at high scool level.

That's awesome. har har har

Butch recruited highly ranked players that didn't fit the system , then failed to develop them at all. And the best ones transferred out. Dobbs/Barnett were our whole team basically but we didn't realize it til they were gone.

JRM’s injury was the nail in the coffin if we’re being honest. He was the ultimate fixer.

He was piling up ~20 tackle games against every elite opponent we played in 2015.

The defense would have been more than serviceable in 16 had he not gotten hurt and we likely cruise to ATL.

I for one am glad Fulmer is back involved in the UT program, makes beating that Tenn azz every October that much more satisfying. And to think he had to get an Alabama man as his coach.

That's how Phil's rolled since 1992.

If you're in Knoxville and awake to find a knife in your back, you don't have to wonder who put it there.

That article mentions Currie asking Fulmer to stand in for him. Plenty of gold in these texts and emails but this ain't it.
