Didn't his Texas team get blown out against Miami, FL in the 1990 or 1991 Cotton Bowl, 3-46?
David McWilliams was coaching then. I was at that game.
Just like the Bama tunnel video, when the Hurricanes came running on that field in 1990, I knew we were dead meat.

Miami won by 6 TDs despite having over 200 yards in penalties.

Akers and Strong were born in Arkansas. That seems odd.

This never got played up that much at the time but Barry Switzer and Fred Akers were teammates at Arkansas.
Which was only slightly stranger than the fact that one of Darrell Royal's closest lifelong friends was Barry Switzer's first boss at Oklahoma... Wade Walker.

As someone who was around then I always got the feeling Akers was fired because he was friends with Switzer which was unacceptable to Royal who continued to hold sway over the program till the day he died.

He also inexplicably would drop games. Example: Maybe it was 1980… he beat OU and is ranked #1, got beat by Arkansas the next week, then tied Houston.

10-9. Go DAWGS!
After that game Akers said in an on field post game interview that the best team did not win that game....he was, of course, politicking for his team to be considered National Champions despite losing to UGA, as he should have done. Not that he had any real leg to stand on after the loss but you have to promote your team as the HC.
They interviewed Akers first because UGA was supposed to lose and lose badly and why would you interview a coach of a team who was just blown out? They were prepared for the Akers interview, had to wing the Vince Dooley interview. In doing so they asked Dooley about Akers statement that the best team did not win. Dooley, about as reserved and non-controversial as a coach could be even in an era when they deported themselves as gentlemen, more so than today, replied "where I come from the best team is the one with the most points when the game is over". Truer words never spoken....
