Tennessee actually isn't that great at pounding the rock

There's a narrative going around that Tennessee has an elite rushing attack however it's a major exaggeration.
Tennessee runs the ball a lot because they can't throw. Tennessee is #6 in rushing attempts per game at 46 rushing attempts per game. Conversely, they are #110 in pass attempts at 24.6 per game.
Tennessee is #27 in YPC at 5.1
For a comparison, Alabama is at #34 with 5.0 YPC, Ole Miss is at #35 with 4.9, and LSU is at #39 with 4.9.
These are three teams who don't have a great rushing attack and have struggled to run the ball at times.
The best rushing defenses Tennessee has faced are #34 Oklahoma (117.5 yards per game) and #44 Arkansas (126.8 yards per game). For a comparison, #40 LSU is giving up 123.6 yards per game.
On a YPC basis, the best defense they've faced is #16 Oklahoma (3.1). In their matchup, Tennessee only averaged 2.9 YPC. Now obviously, quarterback sacks and jet sweeps can skew this, if you look at backs only, they averaged 3.9 YPC, .8 more than the average.
As an aside, they are averaging 20.6 points per game vs SEC teams.

This board is the blind leading the blind .
If we had any help from the passing game, our rushing numbers would be much higher against conference opponents because we wouldn't see so many loaded boxes.
Heupel loves to run the ball regardless so Sampson will get his opportunities each game.
Sampson is most likely praying the passing game gets going not wanting the opposite.
He will completely dominate once the boxes get a little lighter and gain more big splash plays on the ground. Ohr running game is elite though and you are retarded if you are trying to say otherwise.
Nico and our left tackle Lance Heard both need to step up for that to happen.
You anyalysis is off big time.

Doesn’t matter, Kane Wommack exists on the Bama sideline…

They're gonna pound Womcuck Saturday like thundercock.

Alabama's defense has been pretty good against the run this year. But it is Bama and Wommack. Who knows what you're gonna get.

All this says is that you are Captain Obvious. The results say Tenn is good not great at running & the passing game has a lot of work to do.
Are there any injuries causing it/any reason to think this might change over the season??

This is the dumbest thread I've ever encountered on this board OP. Congratulations.
You literally explain why our running game is so strong without even realizing it.
No current ranked team in this conference and probably even nationally has seen more loaded boxes than Tennessee has this year. None.
Also, Bama and Ole Miss have had QB play that have been able to keep the opposing defenses honest.
Just a really really dumb take.
If I'm Dylan Sampson, I'm pissed at Nico and our left tackle, Lance Heard more than anyone else on the team..They are the reason thus far that Sampson doesn't get to run against light or even boxes.
I really think that's changing this weekend though. We are very close to clicking.

This part of the game is what I'll be watching really closely especially early. Does Woemack have a gameplan to stop the off tackle run?
Seems easy enough but its been a problem for Bammer so far this year.

You swore Nico would be great and now he's holding the team back.
My, my.

Just to add some FEI ranks(opponent adjusted).
Tennessee offense:
Overall #40
Defense strength faced: #35
Points Per Drive: #40
Available Yards Percentage: #67
Yards Per Play: #54
% of scoring drives(TD/FG): #53
TD only: #40
Drives of at least 10 yards(aka not 3 and out): #50
3 and outs: #73
Alabama:
Overall #7
Defense strength faced: #17
Points Per Drive: #15
Available Yards Percentage: #48
Yards Per Play: #9
% of scoring drives(TD/FG): #38
TD only: #8
Drives of at least 10 yards(aka not 3 and out): #66
3 and outs: #97
I bolded the 2 on Alabama that are the biggest concerns. What some say is an ability to sustain drives, especially combined with the #9 ranking in yards per play. Tennessee defense is highly rated and likely to cause issues there.

Nico will get there... he's a freshman having freshman moments. Nice deflecting though.

DJS please seek help. You have issues. Like a clingy ex or something.

No deflection necessary.
The numbers say Tennessee isn't an elite rushing team despite facing average rushing defenses.
