Well Pat Summitt actually did use a trashcan, well multiple trashcans, to motivate her team.
After hearing that the team had gone out drinking the night before she set four of them up in the corners of the gym and then ran sprints over and over until those trashcans were well and truly used. She called it her version of the "Four Corners" offense.
