Other than Mississippi, South Carolina is probably the state that has the least number of liberal areas in the entire country.

In his defense -- and it's quite possibly the only defensible thing about him -- the Carolinas do have significant pockets of Yankees. Not enough to sway the vote, but they're a popular destination for Yankees who want to try living in the South but are scared of the 100 degree heat and 117% humidity of the deep South region. So there are outposts of liberalism.
