With LSUs defense, just a little bit of offense could have won them multiple crystal footballs. It's always been the offenses that have lacked.
Agreed 100%. But, A&M doesn't have LSU's defense.
Last year, when LSU had a really good offense, LSU didn't have LSU's defense. Chavis was the DC and the defense sucked for most of the year. Gave up 44 points to Georgia while scoring 41. 38 points to Alabama. Still, he shut Sumlin down completely with JFF so Sumlin is enamored with him. Chavis NEEDS the players to be good and he won't have them at A&M for a while.
But, I do give you credit. Your "who was better?" argument is the best one offered. Thanks for actually engaging.

But name who would have been better that was available?
Whoever they hire of course.
Chavis on the decline, lazy, very glad he is gone, etc..etc.. evidently part of a grand LSU plan of some sort that evidently only a couple of posters (including the OP) are privy to.

This came up on the Coaching Changes board... kinds of speaks to your theory: Beaty interview
Some excerpts:
Some excerpts:

When Kevin Sumlin took over the A&M program after a heck of a run at Houston, he sought to fill his staff with guys who had beaten him.
quote:
“Not one man on his (Texas A&M) staff came from any place other than a team that he lost to,” Beaty said of Sumlin. “And particularly a team that overachieved in an area. His guys on his staff are all guys that beat him somewhere.”

Chavis shut down HUNH offenses. That is the trend in Texas high schools and around the nation. This is exactly the kind of defense we need going forward. This is Sumlin watching trends and making moves to stay ahead. See how I can spin it the other way (which is more likely the truth than you meltdown). How was that?
That is a lot better.
The only problem is that Malzahn has abused Chavis both times they have played. Actually, go back to 2010 with Cam and he abused him then too. Chavis thought he knew how to stop Cam and he got embarrassed. Our punter kept the score relatively close.
Chavis doesn't shut down HUNH offenses. He shuts down Sumlin and A&M. Mobile QBs not named Johnny Manziel give Chavis fits.
His benefit is that he is solid and is a good coach. He will bring discipline and a solid plan and, if he has elite talent, he will field a top 15 defense. But, without that talent and experience, LSU's defense was pretty bad for 1.5 years except for destroying A&M every time we played.
Chavis is good, but is he the best? Is he worth $1.7mill? No. I don't think so. So, the next question is why did Sumlin want him so bad? I have put forward my theory.

I never said any of that. You are responding to others. Not me.

Is this real?
Good grief.
Either go make yourself a drink or put away the multiples you've had.

Boom.
I never read that article before now, but that is exactly what it looks like Sumlin is doing. Beaty gives the proof.
You can call it humility if you like. In this case, I think it is arrogance and a very narrow view of the college football landscape.
Chavis is good, but without the kind of defensive talent that he had at LSU from 2010-2012, he was good-not-great.
The problem is, A&M just gave him the most money that any DC has ever been paid. They are saying that he is the best in the country. I think that Sumlin is developing tunnel vision.
But, hey. My team's coach is Les Miles and the problems there are legion.
