And? We weren't second to them in those decades. We had a couple of pretty damn good seasons in the 80s and the 90s as well including an undefeated season in 1994. So yea, we weren't an "elite" program but we were easily a top 15 program

well no shite. A&M was a small all male military college until the 60s and we were a glorified division two school. Why do you think things changed once we hit the 80s? We hired a good coach in Jackie sherril to go along with scholarship limitations that were imposed in 1975 as well as us emerging as a very large university with resources

No one is denying that. A&M has had good teams, but to this point have not taken advantage of those windows when they have been the hot program in a supposedly loaded state to really do special things.

This is another era so the chance is there. As well as they are playing and as young as they are…. It could happen soon.

Well yea but I'm not talking about that right now. You inferred that right now is the first time a&m has been the better program. When that's false, there was a good two decade period where a&m was the better program. Hell we have a winning record against them since 1975

I follow College Football since 1988 and it's the first time I sense A&M has the long term cards stacked in their favor, not just the better team in a particular season. That's just my impression.

All of this.

The reason why a&m fell off at the start of the new century wasn't just because Texas righted the ship and there was nothing we could do about it. RC Slocum for years was trying to get new facilities. A&M wouldn't budge after the construction of the zone. We fell behind in facilities. Then, mack brown comes in and does something no one had ever done before. Offer juniors. That changed recruiting and that was something RC did not want to do. So Bob stoops and mack brown consistently out recruited RC by the end of the 90s. Not to go along that RC was held onto probably a little bit longer than he should have and we didn't fire him until we already were in a bad place. And what did we then do? Hire Dennis franchione instead of urban Meyer.

It also needs to be said that Texas Football talent is over rated.

I think overexposed is more accurate.

about not caring whether we play Texas
It is mostly the youngsters who talk this silliness about not caring whether we play the 'horns. In my opinion it is youthful posturing and nothing more.

I would estimate that 90% of Ags over the age of 25 would love to revive the game as an annual OOC affair, e.g. Florida/FSU or Clemson/USCe.

If nothing else, playing them would lower the volume of the complaints renour OOC schedule.

I was 24 at the time of the SEC move. Losing the Texas game was my only regret at the time. I thought I would miss it more as the years went by.

The opposite has happened. I truly do not give a frick if we never play them annually again. Let them meet us in the postseason if they're good enough to get there. From a marketing, recruiting, and practical standpoint, there is no advantage to playing them ever again. Not to mention having to deal with having to be better than them AND the refs. Not interested in breathing life into their pittance of a schedule by putting ourselves on it.

I don't give a frick about this, either. Plenty of other notable OOC teams we can play other than some big12 also-ran.

But we do care about Texas! We want them to wander in Fran land for 10 years.

They will always be our biggest recruiting rival because of proximity.

This is the most important thing that A&M fans need to know.

we’re still third in our own division behind LSU and Alabama. That’s where our focus is. That’s where we want to be, to try to compete for championships.”

Yes. But you might want to fine tune the gadgets on defense cause I think its broken.

re question about t.u. and TAMU never being dominant simultaneously
simple math.

Sure, Texas has 5x the population of Alabama, but there historically has been 5x the competition for recruits as well. 'Bama (for example) does not have the same level of competition for in-state recruits,

In addition to t.u. and TAMU, the State or Texas fenerally has at least two or three successful programs at any given time. For instance, I can remember times that t.u., TAMU, Baylor, SMU and Houston were all competitive. We were all in the same conference, so there was not something as clear as the SEC to differentiate the teams for recruits.

Thankfully, that situation has changed.

A&M is not a top 15 program. Probably not even a top 20 program. There are at least 6 football programs in the SEC alone better than the cult

Taken out of context much? That was what Sumlin said after the first season. And this quote says that we are aiming to really compete at the top of the division. The thought was that it would be with LSU and Alabama, but LSU being on tDecline could change that slightly.

It would be interesting to see a survey or poll with a statstically-valid methodology and sample size.

I have 12 first cousins. Ten of us attended TAMU (our grandfather was Class of '37) and the other two are big fans but could not get in. We had a family wedding two weeks ago for the youngest cousin (under age 30), and all of us were in agreement that we would love to see the series resume.

But we may not be a good sample, given our 80-year history with the game.

Historically, no. But with the combination of money, facilities, Texas and the SEC we are a top 15 job right now.

That is all that matters for the future.
