Where did the Stansfield thing come from?

Walter Sharpe

I thought he was going to be an excellent player but never panned out IIRC...

You can choose to believe what I say or not. If you don't believe Stans had money men in his back pocket then you are naive.

It's not that I don't believe you or Stans had money men, it's just I've never heard any examples or stories of what happened in regards to any money men or NCAA.

That's why Stans stepped down. At least from my understanding of what went on.

Yea, the more I think about it the more I think that Georgia would actually be a really good spot for him.

I agree, he would dominate Atlanta recruiting.

I've also heard his name floated for the Memphis job, which would put him in a similar situation.

I would much rather him be in Athens, rather than so close to an already limited Mississippi talent pool.

Stansbury is the opposite of Fox. Together those two would make a helluva coach.

Walter Sharpe signed with State without every visiting campus and then went on Finebaum and said he "really liked Coach Stansfield". So, obviously, the connection was made that he didn't visit campus, didn't even know the coaches name........got $$$$.

Well, now, having known that the kid was a complete moron and couldn't even stay eligible to play, it is plausible that he is just that stupid.

Yea, probably, but this was the height of Stansbury-Gottfried war, so anything like that was obviously pounced on.

Oh yeah, at the time I'm sure that's what everyone thought and may have actually happened.

Looking back on it now, what a waste of talent.

We both had quite a few of those during that rivalry. But man, we both had some great players too. Sure would be nice to get back to that point.

I had forgotten about that until just now.

I knew you were going to post that score. I remember thinking after watching that game I wanted to personally go locate Gott and kick him in the nuts. He kept the starters in the entire game if I recall correctly. But that second game made up for it.

That really was a good thing going between bama-msu.

Yea, that was the game where Powers hard fouled someone at some point and our student section spent the entire 2nd half chanting "POWERS SUCKS, POWERS SUCKS". Ernest Shelton made like 7 first half 3's or something ridiculous. Just kept running off screens from underneath to the corners. Then you guys kicked our teeth in when we went to Starkville, as is tradition.

The atmosphere for those games was just on another level than anything since then. It was so much fun and there were so many great games.
