What he did at UF was great but I think his biggest accomplishment is making USCe a competitive program.
Strongly disagree. I think both Spurrier and Holtz deserve a lot of credit for South Carolina. That said, it's not nearly as big an accomplishment as Spurrier winning 6 SEC titles and dominating the mid 90's Tennessee teams the way he did.

To be fair, they have changed a bit over the years. When they won the title, they did throw a lot, but I'm pretty sure they were a lot more effective running in the early 2000's. It almost seems like they've given up on the defense and the running game. Having Mike Stoops back should help with the defense, IMO.
When they won the title in 2000 they ran the air raid strain of the spread, threw the ball twice as much as they ran it, and threw for 294 yards a game. I think we can put that one to bed. They ran the spread.

In all honesty, it may well have hurt more than it helped. They don't win the national title in 1996, and I don't think they would have been in the title game in any other year.
This. The only time they would have made the title game during this time period would have been 1995 when they actually faced Nebraska in a 1 vs. 2 match up and got run out of the stadium by the Cornhuskers. As dominating as Florida was in the SEC during the 90s, they were only the the third best team in Florida.

I don't know the actual numbers, but I am confident saying that whatever they ran, it wasn't as pass heavy as it is now.

Saban obviously.

The state of Florida had some damn good teams in the 90's. Those Miami teams were badass, FSU was strong and UF w/Spurrier was dominating the SEC.

The coCanes and Free Shoes were also in pathetic conferences.

It's a good question. Both have done it, but in different ways.
Spurrier brought SEC offenses into the 21st century, but he is really more of a "change the culture" influence. He did it at UF and now at USCe. Hell, he even did it at Duke. None of those schools had the success they probably should have, and he started it.
Saban's influence is more about team building. A new way of recruiting, player development (or processing), accountability among the players, along with HIS defensive abilities as a coach. I know his influences have made UGA change several things they do in their player development and recruiting. We'll see if it works for UGA, but they've made the changes none the less.

Holtz went 0-11 with USCe and was in charge when the rivalry with Clemson took an ugly turn. They wouldn't be getting top recruits if not for Spurrier. Holtz never even threatened to win the East.
We're both entitled to our own opinions so we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

Saban because he changed the recruiting game.
There are a half a dozen things that Penn State is now doing under the new staff that mimic what Saban did at both LSU & Alabama.
ETA Spurrier a great coach who hired great recruiters, Saban a great recruiter that hired great recruiters

Holtz was god awful at USCe.

Holtz definitely improved the program.

Good catch, I forgot about Spurrier winning 8 games at Duke.

Didn't Spurrier use to try and score with a min left at Flor..
Posted on 5/16/12 at 12:30 pm to taylormade
Yes he did. His goal was to score 50 every game.

The SEC is known for smash mouth football, what saban does
The big 12 is known for run n' gun, what spurrier used to do
Arkansas is really the only team in the conference that year in and year out is largely one dimensional with a bias towards the passing game.
So how has spurrier made more of an impact on the league when that style of offense is sparingly seen in the conference?
Spurrier brought a decent program to the top and a bad program to decency. Saban has turned 2 dumpster fires into national powerhouses
Also 3 NC> 1 NC

Spurrier has made the most impact on the SEC. Saban may be the best modern coach of the SEC.
