What would the numbers look like if you take out the non-qualifiers? Auburn had a ton in 2007 and 2008.

Alabama had 4 of 25 not enroll in 2007 (Ricks, Lett, J. Taylor, Farmer).

Alabama had 4 of 32 not enroll in 2008 (Jackson, Hood, Ray,Preyear)

So, the 2007/2008 classes for Alabama ended up at 49 over 2 years. Then starting in 2009 began the yearly large exodus of transfers who didn't play (BJ Scott, Star Jackson, Ivan Matchett, etc) and a bunch of NFL entries yearly, leading to similarly high class sizes (with non qualifiers that made the enrolled number smaller) .

So let's not move the bar here - most SEC West programs recruited and signed kids the same way in the mid-late 2000s. They took more chances on bad grade kids because they could. Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Ole Miss and State had huge classes and generally lost 2-4 kids to grades every year.

Now, those kids just aren't even messed with because of the 25 signee rule (unless you end up with an open spot like UGA with Farmer).

I argued with Alahunter until I was blue in the face on the same issue.

OH but IP says it was sleazy for Saban to manage his roster (within the rules) while he was building his program.

While Auburn had players jumping ship and a ton of non-qualifiers.

Wait, so at Auburn trimming the former coaches roster is called kids "voluntarily leaving" and is a problem for the new coach. At Alabama its called "culling the roster" and is the coach cutting players and telling them to GTFO?

It wasn't trimming by the coaches, they left on their own due to new coaches and you know that fact.
Cutting players because you do not like their progress is another issue.

You keep saying "you know that" on opinions and then presenting your own opinions as book, chapter and verse fact. Incredibly, they always seem to paint Auburn in a positive light and Alabama in a negative one. Always. Literally always.

Inability to concede a single point or compliment to a rival because of one's personal biases and dislikes is pretty sad. But old dogs don't learn new tricks, I guess.

The crazy part is he actually brings some good discussion in other areas that are SEC related. He just has a major problem when it comes to anything Bama related.

He did a fairly good job of getting this thread derailed early though.

Yea it's frustrating because it's not Willy just trolling it's just total blind spot related to anything and everything Alabama.

And so, even if he does make a relatively interesting point about Alabama, it's like the boy who cried wolf.

Oh well, cheers to Puppets.

So you saw something different when he was processing players ? Were they discipline problems ? Did they have grade issues ? Nothing was done illegally, but even the diehards knew what was going on. The words "the Process" took on an entire different meaning. Why are you running from it ?

P.S- I am as hard on Gus as any AU fan.

If I remember correctly 1 player complained about what was going on in a WSJ article. After years of digging and looking for complaining during the oversigning debate during the hot days of the media's Saban is the devil campaign.

Again, how does the same standard of normal coach turnover on the roster (including former guys who are either told or figure out on their own that they don't fit the new regime) apply to everyone else and not Saban?

It's just another bar that you hold Saban to and somehow just don't apply to everyone else (see upsets about 4 pages back).

You can argue that telling kids who are already at a place that they won't fit in the new system is wrong or unseemly, that's fine. But acting as if Saban doing that isn't common with all new coaches is not.

I always thought you were one of the few Bama fans that would occasionally take off his Crimson Colored glasses when discussing a serious issue. I see I was wrong in that respect. Nobody is holding Saban to a different standard. He did it in broad daylight and over numerous seasons. And most were his own recruits. That is how the system worked. Sign 30 recruits after chasing off the ones who are not progressing to your satisfaction, the next year run off 5-8 more and sign 30 again. Over a four year period you have signed an additional class. Survival of the fittest and just like they do in the Pros.
