So which independents did you count during the 70s and 80s? For example, there were 29 in 1970, including a bunch of small schools.

Houston
Georgia Tech
W. Virginia
Va tech
Syracuse
Pittsburgh
Miami
Boston College
South Carolina
Florida State
Penn St
Louisville
Notre Dame

I believe that is all of the ones I accounted for during their Independent status.

I've got State at 29-24, and I've went through their schedules 3 times. Here is what I've got:
Wins(29) Losses(24)
1970's 13-6
1980's 6-5
1990's 5-4
2000's. 1-6
2010's. 4-3

I apologize about that brother. There were games in '75, '76, and '77 that were counted as a loss due to the ineligible player ruling by the NCAA. I updated it accordingly to show "wins on the field" for Mississippi St. I have them at 30-27 now.

Here are the 27 losses I have for Mississippi St:

Houston 10/10/1970
Oklahoma State 9/11/1971
Oklahoma State 9/11/1971
Florida St 10/9/1971
Florida St 10/14/1972

Nebraska 12/27/1980
Missouri 10/3/1981

Oklahoma State 9/19/1998

Texas 1/1/1999
Oregon 8/31/2002

West Virginia 10/7/2006

It's 24 losses on State. You counted Okie Lite twice in 71, 98 and 2013. That puts us at a .556 winning pct right below LSU in 6th. That's right Mississippi State Big 6.

Eek. Looks like OK St is counted twice for each occurrence. Not sure how that happened. Even worse, not sure how I went over manually and missed it again AND posted it WITH duplicates.

Fixing now. Apologies.

I never post, but this is one of the more interesting bits of original content I’ve ever seen posted here. Only mostly because I’m a UGA fan. Nice work.

The biggest takeaway is how often UGA schedules OOC P5 schools.

It isn't just playing Georgia Tech (compare UGA to UF who has FSU/Miami).

We don't always win them. But we win them at a good enough clip.

All of this talk about 9 conference games... this isn't rocket science, people. Schedule better OOC.

South Carolina really helped us win that. Getting to count their independent years was big.
