Would Alabama be considered southern rock?
Posted on 8/5/25 at 3:21 pm to Harry Rex Vonner
I nominate Better Than Ezra, The Gin Blossoms, Hootie & the Blowfish, and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

Some of his stuff is about as close as it gets to new “southern rock” today. And that Honeysuckle Blue cover is quintessential southern rock. And how has someone who starts a thread about Southern rock never heard of Drivin’ n Cryin’? That is crazy.

Do they get credit for Levon being from Arkansas while the others were from Canada?
Yes, up until Levon left. Then it was just a bunch of infighting yankees.

Whiskey Myers isn’t a guy. This reminds me of that scene from Armageddon where Owen Wilson is like “people think Jethro Tull was a guy…”

No

The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section had a bigger impact on southern rock, and several other genres, than just about anyone. They should be included.
Jerry Lee Lewis, John Cash, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley paved the way for later “southern rock”. Sun Records was southern rock before there was southern rock. They too should have some kind of presence.

They'd be called Rockabilly at best I think not true Southern Rock.Someone nominated Alabama....please. They're country. Period.
Creedence?
Nothing Southern about those boys they're West Coast. Eagles? No. Just no. I know where Tom Petty's from but his sound ain't Southern,
Creedence?
