I would have said that also until recently. Now, nothing would surprise me.

GT's fanbase is aging out. There are plenty of elderly Tech fans, rabid too. But as they die off, they aren't being replaced. A great school in downtown Atlanta should be doing better but they just keep getting worse. They have money. They are AAU. They have an NC more recently than UGA. But still nobody cares. What are they to do but rattle and die?

As Clemson has proven, the right coach and the school's overall commitment to the sport can turn any program around.

You have to think that if Tech had not left the SEC and being in Atlanta, the heart of fertile recruiting territory that they could be a power in the SEC to deal with today.

At least Clemson was coasting in mediocrity for a while. GT is coasting in the sewer. I'm convinced that Nick Saban himself couldn't turn around GT football. It's that bad.

Not so fast. Texas has pulled shite that makes Bobby Dodds seem like a down home guy.

Besides bamas days of having an outsized voice is ending quickly. Longhorns, sooner, and now the Aggies aren't going to give a shite what Bama wants.

It’s not that bad. It got bad for the same exact reason FSU got bad and has been bad since they won a natty 7 years ago. We had a coach who quit recruiting and the system he was running was taking care of that itself on top of it. Jimbo Fisher quit recruiting at FSU at the end and it has fricked them for years now. GTs talent is improving significantly we are just young and it’s a complete overhaul. Do you know anything about college football and what it takes to change something like what we have had to do? Sit down and shut the frick up and let the adults discuss this because your program has under achieved for 4 decades with unlimited resources. With all due.

Please. We had thé cheapest athletic dept of thé "BIG 6" until Kirby.Last to get à IPF,last to hire analyst.Hell,CMR had to pay assts out of his own pocket.First time we've been a "all in" school since Dooley.

It kinda is.What are you doing about thé fan base ? Metro Atl. has exploded in growth thé last 20+ years and thé midtown area around GT has improved dramatically and you haven't capitalized on any of it.Ya can't blame it all on "lazy recruiting" or Paul Johnson. You also have some serious athletic department debt that's gonna be difficult to solve without some serious fund raising efforts...not gonna do it through gate receipts or ACC TV money GT financial woes

I think it started with Chick Granning and Darwin Holt and grew with the Bear beating Dodd on a regular basis. Bobby Dodd said it was hard to play for Championships when you had to play Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee every year.

Nope. Tech beat them 24-21 in 81 handing 9-1-1 Bama their only regular season loss. They tied USM, and then lost to Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

My guess is that after pulling out, there just wasn't enough heat to try to keep GT as a regular game while still playing UT yearly out of division. Not sure.

Dodd was an arrogant guy....publically demanded Bear suspend Holt for that questionable hit putting Bryant in a spot, refused to travel to play the Mississippi schools, and generally tried to run the SEC his way. Then there was the whole AJC thing.

Bryant actually buried the hatchet or at least tried with to with Bobby Dodd. A few years after they left, Bryant approached Dodd and Tech to try to get them to come back to the SEC and offered to sponsor them and push publicly to make it happen.

Dodd refused.

At the very minimum Bryant should have issued an apology and said nothing.

He did it through an intermediary (Bill Curry) and Dodd thought they had zero chance of getting back in even with the Bears help but did agree to resume playing Bama and ironically Curry was the HC by then and beat the Bear and Bryant in '81

He didn't owe Dodd anything. Had he stuck around college football was changing rapidly. From freshmen eligibility to scholarship limitations a lot was getting redefined about college sports in the next decade.

Dodd didn't play well with the other kids and would rather take his ball and go home. How'd that work out?

How did this come to be? Well, that’s an interesting story and part of a two part story that started three years earlier in 1961. That year, a Tech punt return man, Billy Richardson signaled for a fair catch and every relaxed. Everyone that is but Alabama coverage man Darwin Holt, who blindsided a tech blocker, Chick Graning and left him with a broken jaw, five missing teeth, a broken nose, blood in his respiratory system, and a severe concussion. Tech fans were livid as was the team and coach.

After the game, Tech’s legendary coach Bobby Dodd told Bryant he not only expected an apology, but disciplinary actions taken by Holt. Brant refused both. This started a war between the two schools that led to another action which finally drove Georgia Tech to leave the SEC, despite being on of the more successful programs in the league. From 1933, Tech won five SEC titles in just 19 years. Auburn for instance, has only won eight SEC titles in 83 years.

Fans in Atlanta hated Alabama so bad that tensions were razor sharp. Two years earlier when the game was in Atlanta, fans hurled whiskey bottles at Bryant as he left and in this game, Bryant chose to take no chances. Georgia Tech hatred of Alabama caused the stopping of this long standing series, one of Alabama’s longest. Until then, it was quite a brawl each year with Tech usually winning as many as they lost. Even the Alabama fight song references this rivalry in the line that says, “Send the Yellow Jackets to a watery grave”.
