Exactly. There was usually one blowout every year with 4, and somehow people thought adding 8 more teams would make for better matchups and better games.
And we have some calling for a 16 team playoff, now.

I was in favor of Auto qualifiers but thst was by thinking the ACC, big12 and pac were actually good conferences.
Penn state and Texas get it easier than the top two seeds.
Break the nation back down to about 6 or 7 ten-or-twelve team leagues if you’re going to do it this way.

In the end it does not matter because only 4 or 5 teams tops are legit contenders. After that there are arguments that can be made for the next 15 to get the last 7 or 8 spots.

See I will disagree because if we lose to OU in September and beat UGA in November even with 3 losses Alabama would have probably been in the playoffs. It has more to do with perception than record after the top 4. At the end Alabama did not look very good and to be honest were not.

-Stop trying to create conferences around television deals. If your goal is to make the most money from television then don’t get bitter when 9-3 leaves you out of the playoff.

It's possible. But losing to Oklahoma AND Vanderbilt is what caused Alabama to miss. If they put Alabama in after two bad losses like that? I mean, Alabama fans still bring up that ND lost to Northern Illinois.
Honestly? It was very strange how uneven Alabama was this year. Saban might have an upset here and there, but never 2-3 upsets. Alabama was just an inconsistent team.....as was Georgia.

Who does the ranking? Do you remember there was a time when southern teams were at a disadvantage in the ranking system?

Use the BCS system with the computer component. I don't care.
Does Wimbledon take the 12th ranked player in the world and seed them 4th? That's what the stooges on the CFP Board of Managers have done.

Don’t really know or care about tennis. Have no problem with Arizona State getting fourth seed in a 12 team playoff. Conference championships should matter or be eliminated.

While this CFB Playoff helped make the regular season more exciting I think it has shown 12 teams is too much, and the idea of auto qualifiers for 4 teams is a bad one.
Drop to 6 teams with the top two retaining byes. Keep that initial home atmosphere; I have liked that a great deal.
Then we need to really reform the bowl games, hopefully by eliminating at least 1/3rd.
Lastly, I think CFB needs to brink back the loss of a year of eligibility for those using the transfer portal.
I’ve given a wider scope than the original question but I feel all points are intertwined.
