UGA easily has underachieved the most. They have a huge advantage on everyone because they are the flagship school of probably the most talented state per capita in the whole country...... and yet they don’t have shite to show for it but their fans act like they belong at the same table with Bama, Clemson, Ohio State, and LSU

Uga is simply way too close to our ceiling to win the biggest underachiever award. This ain’t the 90’s.

Just need that luck the other programs you named have had.

Luck is being prepared when opportunity presents itself. We have failed at that at least 2 times in the last 7 years. We have had opportunities when others were down and we were up and thus far have failed to close. Hope springs eternal but We have to be at the top of any list of programs who have squandered opportunity.

Auburn is the king of overachieving and it is all due to the rivalry between Alabama and Auburn. If the Iron Bowl was a typical in state rivalry Auburn wouldn't be as dedicated to competing with Alabama but given the year round attention paid to the iron bowl Auburn has to be as good as Alabama most years and better occasionally or the entire staff is gone...from top to bottom. Usually when you are better than Alabama you are in the hunt for a pretty good season.

UGA is spoonfed talent and they can’t win it. Georgia produces badass lineman, QBs, skill guys, literally everything and most of them are within an hour of campus. How they haven’t put it together for at least 1 title in the past 40 years baffles me.

There ain't a simple answer but it largely is due to expectations and acceptable outcomes. There just is not the programmatic devotion to winning it all at UGA as there is at other programs in the conference. Alabama is what it is. Auburn and LSU both suffer from being in the same division but it also forced both programs to be better because they both have to beat Alabama from time to time. UGA has an instate rival that amounts to a rent a win 7 seasons out of 10 and a rival in Florida who was basically Mississippi State until Spurrier arrived...they had never won a SEC title. Beat Florid and Tech and UGA boosters are more than ready to wait 'til next year. LSU and Auburn do not have that luxury because their main rival is almost impossible to beat most years and thus they must compete at that level mentally and as a program....UGA doesn't have that.

Atlanta is also a blessing and a curse...lots of schools with huge alumni bases in Atlanta so even with the loads of talent in Atlanta area high school football the competition is stiff with split loyalties. Also LOADS of NFL, NBA and MLB fans in Atlanta from other places and CFB just ain't as important in Atlanta as it is in Birmingham and New Orleans...thus programmatic support is not as great. Money may be similar but demands for the buck ain't close....and there is ample proof of this.

I can think of 4 seasons where UGA at season end was a spot or 2 away from the BCS title game/making playoffs - 2002, 2007, 2018, 2019. Adding in the year they made the natty, that's 5 years out of 20 where they were bonafide contenders - it just hasn't happened for them.

You're forgetting 2012 and the greatest SEC Championship Game ever played. If Georgia wins that game, they beat Notre Dame for the national championship.

That’s literally not what luck is.

Luck is often needed to get the opportunity in the first place, and then luck is also often needed when given the opportunity.

We have to be at the top of any list of programs who have squandered opportunity.

That’s not what this discussion is about.

Texas A&M has always been mediocre. Tennessee falling off so spectacularly is the surprise they were the #2 team in most SEC all time categories and have been passed up by Georgia since then and LSU is closing the gap as well

No shit, Sherlock. No one can know for certain, but it's an educated guess based on fairly solid evidence.

they are still #3 in the SEC in overall wins since 2000
With zero national titles

Bama has 5
LSU has 3
Florida has 2
Auburn has 1 (should have been 2)

quote:

have won multiple conference championships, and have been in a position to actually win a national title.

But they didn’t win the title. In 2001 if Tennessee beats LSU then they go to the natty.

This isn’t horseshoes. You win it all or you don’t.

quote:

Now you can say that Georgia has superior resources to Tennessee and you'd be correct. That has always been the case, however. Tennessee had to survive by recruiting nationally and they were pretty damn good at doing that, especially in Fulmer's more formative years.

Ok? Georgia has more resources by a mile- we agree. They both have zero national titles while Georgia has more wins.

Compared to where the two programs were in January 2000, Tennessee is definitely the bigger of the two underachievers.

I'd say Vandy overachieved during the Franklin years.

Smart bama fan.

The Underachiever is easily Tennessee. There is no debate. In the context of the OP, since 2000, UT is clearly the underachievers.

Smart LSU fan.

And get ran by Miami. What's your point? If 2012 Georgia defeats Alabama they not only go to the national title, they win it.

I'm not wrong. Tennessee was the second winningest program in the SEC in the 1990s and the second winningest program in the SEC of all-time. From 2000-Present they are 146-104 (a winning percentage of .584). Georgia in that same time period is 198-67 (a winning percentage of .747). Looking at the two programs' historical winning percentages (Tennessee - .674; Georgia - .655) it's actually arguable that Georgia has overachieved since the year 2000.

You are now experiencing what our fans deal with everyday on here with the "hurrrr durrrr 1980" drivel.

You are making rational points that can't be refuted with any real logic, yet you have countless people saying how wrong you are simply because it's UGA being discussed. Pretty sad isn't it?

ETA: if this was a blind question with team names removed and only the black and white, irrefutable data was posted everyone in the universe would pick Tennessee as the team that's most underachieved.

Yes, we do. Georgia would have beaten Notre Dame that year. Was obvious.

We also don't know that lsu would have beaten grambling last year but you can probably look at both teams bodies of work and make an educated guess on which team was better.
