Andy Staples of SI was most intrigued by one stat regarding the LSU vs Ala game. Staples noted that YPP (yards per play) is the best stat to gauge a teams defense.
The best defense Alabama has faced up to now was 90th in YPP. As dominating as Alabama’s offense has been, Staples notes the best defense Bama has faced wasn’t even considered decent, and now it’s going to face a great defense in LSU. Staples noted he found that stat most intriguing, and that he found it on of all places, Finebaum’s show.
Staples noted of all the teams Alabama has faced or will face, LSU represents the greatest hurdle for this Ala team to reach the playoffs. Alabama simply hasn’t played any defense near the caliber of LSU’s.
Shocking, to know that Gumps have been misrepresentibg the true facts about their supposed invincible Alabama team? LSU represents a major test for Alabama, these Tigers from LSU have the best chance of kicking that Alabama #ss.

Bamas also scored about 35 points in the first half of every game. Yeah they haven’t played teams with good defenses...but they have also blown them out as a result. It’s not like they’ve struggled against teams with bad defenses.

This guy gets it. Which is why all these stats pre game don’t matter. This game will be decided by which team can run the most balanced offense and any bad decisions or turnovers.

I truly hope that we hear from you after Saturday...but I doubt it.

Bama is the best team without Tua. They have the best player from every state. With Tua is just next level.

So true. Throw stats out the window for this game. Any given Saturday really applies in this one. Plus nobody beats LSU 8 times in a row. Nobody.

Just curious, if the actual greatest offense of all time played Bama's schedule and didn't play their starting QB beyond the first drive of the second half, how many more points would they be scoring?
The only answers are they'd be up by 60 at the half or they'd be doing the same as Bama so... thanks for the stats I guess.

I don’t know who wins, but do I know for four quarters Bama fans are going to be stressed out, those gump asses will be chapped.

I would agree it is probably the most important stat about this game.
1983 Nebraska was being called the greatest team ever and the greatest offense of all time back in 83. They were averaging 58 points a game midway through a season they would end up averaging 53 a game.
Mid year, they played the only team they played all year that was halfway decent. Oklahoma State who would end up ranked #18. The final score was 14-10.
It does make a difference when you play nobodies all year then a take a big step up in competition.
Of course bama isnt 83 Nebraska and have player some decent teams unlike 83 Nebraska who literally just played high school teams all year. Still, worth noting.

Those dives up the middle midway through the 3rd quarter til the end of the game have really screwed and skewed the stats this year.

Yes this. I don’t understand the “well they haven’t played anyone good on defense yet” arguemet.
It’s true. But how are they doing? Are they doing bad against these poor defenses? Oh they are scoring 54 points a game which is first in the country, average nearly 40 points per first half, have covered the first half spread in all games played, and have scored a TD on their opening possession in all 8 as well. And it’s looked easy as it could possibly be. Oh and their likely heisman QB hasn’t played in the 4th quarter yet.
BUT THEY HAVENT PLAYED A GOOD DEFENSE. Yea okay. Let’s say we hold them to half of their average - 27 points. How do we get to 28?

Another intriguing stat: LSU has only played two teams ranked top 70 in total offense and two teams ranked top 60 in passing offense this season.
Miami- 84th total, 93rd passing
Auburn- 83rd total, 87th passing
Louisiana Tech- 81st total, 49th passing
Ole Miss- 5th total, 4th passing (Numbers are greatly inflated by the yards they put up against non Power 5 teams this season)
Florida- 78th total, 98th passing
Georgia- 29th total, 65th passing
Mississippi State- 71st, 107th in passing

Hook Em Horn-less.... did TX chalk up Saturday as a an "L" w/an asterisk??

Even more telling is LSU is facing just as good a defense as theirs with a fraction of Alabama's offensive talent.

And, inversely, their offense. LSU ranks 99th nationally in YPP. They will be the 2nd worst offense Alabama has played all year. Alabama ranks 19th in YPP defense (LSU ranks 24th).
#1 Alabama Offense vs #24 LSU Defense
#99 LSU Offense vs #19 Alabama Defense
Yes, I agree with Andy. YPP is an important stat. Glad you brought it up.
