If only there was a little audible beep when the product scans... oh wait.
The absolute bastards got away with

Because they stole items
Charges may have been dropped, but they took multiple items they didn't pay for.

When retailers made the decision to maximize share holder value by eliminating employees they made a decision to accept the losses that having customers self checkout resulted in. If you had a tomato stand on the side of the road and a sign saying to pay what you thought was right you have no right to complain when someone does exactly what you asked of them.

Every school needs a fixer. If you don't, you are doing it wrong.

A stay away order, fine, and community service would be a perfectly reasonable outcome for what they did.

Apparently nothing. The thing they need to do is hire a good lawyer.

Asking the tough questions. I am sure the manager of that Walmart is now a season ticket holder for Georgia games.
I thought that this was a funny response. Good job...
In reality, someone in Athens probably reminded the Walmart manager about how many illegals work at that store.

The funniest part about all of UGA's legal issues is your fans thinking certain local media members have it out for you just because they report on this stuff
It’s even funnier to think there’s an invisible barrier around Athens that once crossed, people become unable to follow the law. It’s either that, or there is a shitty group at the media that can’t wait to get a football player in trouble and then blast it. I don’t think there’s another college town that this would have even made headlines. It’s been going on since Richt suspended players for things Saban didn’t even hear about because no one gave a shite.

Hey Che, that’s rich coming from a fan of a school that had a basketball player delivering the murder weapon to a former player who killed a young mother. Didn’t stop y’all from letting the guy continue to play.
Bama apparently found the entire thing hilarious since they even had a skit where they frisked the guy at the pregame introductions. Damn it Gump! I’d keep my self righteous mouth closed if I were you

Happens all the time
Those scanners have a high fail rate something like .000000001% of the time

The AJC is the worst. Nothing they love more that reporting on speeding tickets. On the front page too! It sells papers

Well, it happened to me. I guess I was lucky. I could have been cuffed and hauled off to jail if I were a UGA athlete

Or they could have looked at the scanned items list and saw that half their items didn’t show up and that their total was off

Sounds like they already did given the charges were dismissed

Do you really check your items like this before you exit Walmart? Get real
Posted on 12/15/25 at 3:11 pm to tylerdurden24
Hmm didn't scan, must be free.

You sound touchy.
Simply responding to a prompt as to why the PD was involved. They stole things (knowingly or not). Then, charges were dropped and they were released.
As far as the BB stuff, I have never been in support of the decision of Oats. Nor, do I or any of us have any say in such a decision. So, I'm confused about the implication in your post. "Ya'll" didn't do anything.
Glad charges were dropped in this case. But, it doesn't mean they weren't leaving without paying for items and a police investigation wasn't warranted.
Beep or no beep. We have all scanned items at self-checkout. It is plausible it was an honest mistake, like forgetting the case of cokes you had under the cart, but it doesn't seem likely, and it doesn't change the fact they were attempting to leave the store with items that weren't paid for.
Yet, again, fraud/theft prevention caught it with no loss to the store. Would much prefer the outcome that occurred with dropped charges and possibly a lesson learned for 2 young men with promise and no known history of other transgressions

That isn’t what happened.
Multiple people reported the players offered to pay for the items that didn’t scan and the Walmart manager refused to let them. Apparently, even ACCPD (well known for targeting UGA students regardless of their athletic standing) allegedly encouraged the Walmart manager not to press charges either.
I am getting it from this story.

quote:
On Monday, The Athletic obtained the police report.
Glover and Walker were charged after they allegedly attempted to leave a Walmart without paying for a combined 13 items that totaled $94, according to an incident report provided by Athens-Clarke County police. The players told police they did not realize a store scanner had not picked up the items.
Glover and Walker were stopped by a Walmart staff member when they were leaving. They initially declined to go into the store’s loss prevention office before a police officer arrived, handcuffed them and took them into the office.
During an interview in the office, per the report, the players told the police officer “they had not intended to steal the merchandise and that they must have lost track of what items had been scanned between the two.”
The report does not state how many items the players paid for when checking out. It does mention a debit card was used to pay for some other items.
The decision was up to the store on whether to press charges, and the loss prevention team did so, in addition to informing Walker and Glover they were barred from that Walmart for two years.
I am not wanting to string them up, as they are stupid arse college kids, and I did worse when I was in college. But they knew what they were doing.
