How do you lead a team to national championships when they are awarded five decades later by a computer program?
At best you have one championship, and when awarded, mainstream media was referencing AP/UPI selections as champions not the football writers poll.

B+
Would have gotten to an A- if he hadn't left in a mess and gotten some playoff wins.
He wouldn't have made the SECCG so A is out of reach.
A+ is reserved for some sort of championship or at least an national championship game appearance.
If he had had back to back playoff runs without a championship then I suppose an A could be justified.

C+ when you consider how he disappeared the week of the Kentucky game that one year. That’s as unprofessional as it gets.

Between 1970 and 2020 ( Lane’s first year) Ole Miss has exactly three 10 win seasons.
After going 5-5 in his first year, his system averaged better than 10 wins per year even including the 8-5 2022 team.
It’s not just the wins, he made Ole Miss into a program that you had to take seriously.
He did an A+ job.

LSU Football fans are so starved for affirmation for their team, that they’re now begging for compliments for what their coach did at another program.
I would give him a fricking F for quitting on them at the end, any other answer is absurd. Any coach will tell you, it’s about how you finish.
You must hate anyone who takes a new job

Is there a reason you left Johnny Vaught off? (Answer is “yes, there is”):
quote:
Johnny Vaught is the winningest coach in Ole Miss football history, compiling a 190-61-12 record (.745) from 1947–1970 and 1973. He led the Rebels to three national championships (1959, 1960, 1962), six SEC titles, and 18 bowl games. Vaught was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1979.
Johnny Vaught was a great coach and that is a given to anybody who knows anything about SEC football history.
I acknowledged this when I referred to his greatness to start the topic.
People are quick to forget that Ole Miss just doesn't win 10-11 games on a regular basis at all since Vaught.
I wanted to make sure people understood this before asking them to grade the job he had done there.

What grade would you give a coach that got beaten by 21 in the SECCG then said "hold my beer" and then lost 35 in the CFP?

Not really. Lane was chasing down spurned poon in Austin that week. Once you know that, it’s no head scratcher at all.
It seems like Ole Miss fans only made this up after Lane left.
I never recall hearing even a rumor about this prior.

He disappeared because he’s always looking for a way out. Put some effort in this year because he was looking for an exit strategy.

Thanks for the thoughtful and insightful reply.
I really appreciate that you took the time to edit a two word post to get it just right!
Nah, I edited a longer, more a-hole post. I didn't want to come off as such a prick on a Sunday morning.

You guys would literally skin him alive for doing what he did in 2024. This whole thing is going to be hilarious to watch play out

We probably won't say much.
Then we'll drag him through the mud once he leaves, like Ole Miss fans have.

B+ to A-. Lost a lot of games he should have won. Offense was great but failed to recruit consistently on defense. Lots of questionable short yardage play calling (end around on 4th and 2 with one of the best CFB RBs). Great offensive mind. Successful at Ole Miss. Never seemed to get out of his own way, or over the proverbial "hump."

No idea. Either an A- or a B+. He never won anything there but was competitive
Only thing your school is competitive in is judging meat.

And I don’t even give the A&M coach a B+. What is your point?

A, I think Stinky Pete will make the program decline.
