the only reason no one hitches about it is that the teams who do it don’t really have an ACE.

Smart coaching if it works, bush league if it don't.

It just means that you don't have a true #1 that can go head to head with other team's #1.

It means we don’t want to risk losing Friday 5-4 and Sunday 25-7.

Could also mean you don’t have a competent #3, which we don’t. If you’re going to lose every game your #3 starts anyway (outside Miz and A&M), might as well lose that game on Friday against the other team’s best pitcher to give yourself a better chance on Sunday (and Sat for that matter).

It's all setting up for the postseason. If Bama can take the Florida series (big IF), and maybe win a game or 2 in the SEC Tourney, they might host.
If they do, then they'll be a 1 seed going against a 4; at which point your #3 pitcher should be ok.
If they're a 2 seed, that gets dangerous; as I expect some of the 3 seeds are going to have some good Friday pitchers, and/or some good bats.
Super Regional against a top team... say against LSU. That's very risky. Basically conceding game 1 against Anderson, then hoping your Saturday guy can beat Eyanson (who's more of a 1A than a #2), just to get to game 3.
LSU in contrast, we're gonna host and almost certainly be a national seed. I wouldn't be surprised if we go with Evans or Shore (the 2 guys who have been our #3) against the 4 seed, in the regional. But in the Super, I expect the plan will be to have both ready in the bullpen in games 1 and 2, with the intent to win in 2.

It's a strategy with pros and cons but I don't think anything about it is bush league.

We are a 3rd bullpen arm short of being truly competitive in almost every series.
Currently Alabama is 39-13 overall, 15-12 in the SEC tied for 7th place, and has an RPI of 12.
To say they aren’t competitive is stupid.

It all depends on the bullpen.
The MVP of any baseball team is a #1 pitcher who can eat up innings.
If the pen is the strength of the staff then Bamas strategy is sound.
State got pretty far in a CWS by pitching backwards - throwing a ceremonial starter & then leaning on the pen
