Yeah, but he is likely doing this a deeply discounted rate for the pub. Plus, he is a criminal defense attorney and you don't get one of those just because UGA might sue. You get that because UGA might be able to use that basis to sue as a basis to bring extortion charges.

And Todd is not fooling around in the lawyer dept either, he has William H. King III from the same firm that Cam and Manziel used.

Racketeering, money laundering, fraud, and obstruction of justice come to mind.
ETA: And the point remains, these guys aren't lawyering up to present some united front against Gurley, Winston, and the nameless others who they've had sign autographs because they fele this is a cause worth fighting for. They're lawyering up to protect their asses from the hell that they have unleashed. Gurley could potentially pursue charges for blackmail (a felony in GA) and the University could seek damages for lost revenue (which would really be fricked up considering the root issue of being able to profit off of ones likeness, but it's still possible). These guys have a hell of a lot more to lose than to possibly gain (Nothing. They have nothing to gain).
Exactly this.

When will the next student-athlete scratch out another autograph for one of these scumbags? They have pretty much screwed the pooch and any future income genreated from their autograph business.

I would imagine to lawyer up has very little to do with UGA possibly pushing for a law suit. Someone asked about criminal charges and jail time. Yes he can face them if he is considered an agent by giving Gurley money. This would fall under things like UAAA which in the UNC scandal after sanctions saw charges brought against a man in GA with jail time of up to 15 months for each count(13). In 2013 it was the first time someone was prosecuted under the Act.

I am not saying this is what is going on but many laws have been created to address an athlete inducement whether it is to receive money or sign a contract for the future. This Act was signed by the state of GA as well. By the way I believe that each signature paid for is a separate count.

The real concern is if criminal charges are filed against them and they cut a deal to sell out someone else. The NCAA can not do anything and they can remain silent but under this Act they can be charged and information can be subpoenaed.

Let the NCAA do their own shite and punish us as they saw fit.

We're not a basketball school, we know this. Our program was going to take a major hit regardless with loss of scholarships and firing our coaches. We should have known we'd be in the depths for a while. So at the very LEAST we should've let that team, which was one of the 5 best teams we've had in school history, keep playing until told not to. That team was a final 4 caliber team no doubt in my mind. And we wouldn't let them play, or even play in teh SECT.

Punish the coaches, punish us going forward, but to do that to those kids is just sickening. I'm not surprised they showed up on adam's front lawn and had to have the police escort them away.

What if the possibility of a criminal investigation looking into extorsion uncovered that these guys also had significant numbers of autographs from top players at FSU and Alabama, etc? What if also they had to explain whether they were paying taxes on this enterprise?
