What you stated is called "networking".
If your company is passing on a more qualified candidate to hire someone from a specific school, I know we don't work for the same company.
And in my expierance, when hiring for STEM positions, the applicants from schools you do not traditionally think of as being strong in STEM knock their interviews out of the park. Alabama and Ole Miss immediately come to mind.
An under the radar one we're getting a lot of good hires out of is Belmont. On paper, you wouldn't think a Church of Christ Liberal Arts college would be producing absolute rock stars for Engineers, but they are.

Auburn has the best PR department in the entire universe for this number to continue to be quoted.
All I know is all my friends with kids applying to colleges say the same thing: “We’re hoping our kid can get into Auburn but he/she has been waitlisted and he/she might have to go to Alabama where they’ve already been accepted.”
I’ve literally never heard that conversation with the schools reversed. Like not once ever.

In MOST fields, if your degree isn't from Vandy, MIT, an Ivy League school, or the like, most places won't give a shite what the name of the university is on your degree.
This is 100% correct.
However, the small number of career paths where it does matter happen to be some of the most lucrative. Want to be in investment banking? If you go to an SEC school, it better be Texas:

You really should look at more than one source for rankings.
US News
The WSJ
Money Magazine
All 3 have college rankings using different criteria, which put more weight or less weight on different factors.
There is quite a bit of range in the rankings based on the weights in the formula that each publications uses.

50% of these numbers are wrong. I'm not checking the rest.

or Vandy, .83% vs. UT's .51%

I’m familiar with Peak Frameworks, they have good research and are data driven. McCombs has high marks and has good alumni connections on Wall Street. Larger workforce spread across more firms in NYC.
Mergers and Inquisitions does good research also. They spell out the caveat in target schools, regarding applying for a job in NYC Vs Houston, for example.
Basically for the IB that have an Energy Division in Texas, then Texas A&M and Rice places students there.

But the main takeaway is that you need to consider your school in relation to your region and career goals. For example, if you attend a university like Texas A&M or Rice, and you want to stay in Texas and work in IB in Houston, you’re completely fine.

I meant for this to post on the rival fan’s kid attending Auburn thread, but it’s relevant to this too. As much as we trash talk each other, I would have been happy for my son to get his degree from Auburn. When you’re talking about your kids’ future, this sports rival shite doesn’t matter…
My son had a similar situation. ACT 29, high 3.x GPA. Took ACT 3 times and couldn’t get over that 30 hump even with tutoring. Ugh. Wanted to major in engineering. He applied at Auburn and we spent E-Day there.
He eventually decided to stay close to home and went to UAH. It’s not Auburn but a good engineering program and major opportunities in Huntsville for eng grads. If I remember correctly his package at Auburn was Spirit of Auburn schollie for $5000 a year and some other benefits. Got a similar deal at UAH. That one damn ACT point cost us thousands a year!

How do you feel about the rankings for this particular publication? How about the ranking for 1-4?

it is absolutely amazing the difference in 1 measly point between a 29 and a 30 on the ACT can do for a student when it comes to scholarships , etc.
I hope your kid is enjoying UAH – I know of a few from the Baton Rouge area that attend UAH and absolutely love it.

One of those has more stroke than all of the rest combined. The other rankings are ignored by the schools, but if a school gets an unfavorable ranking in US News, they freak out:

The top 4 rankings are not surprising to me. UF has a good reputation from what I can tell.

Do I think Admissions offices care a lot more about it, and try to work their numbers to fit US News formula? Yes, they all play the numbers game.
That, along with WSJ and Money magazine rankings provides a bigger picture though.

UGA is right up there also. I agree with you.
It REALLY depends on the major you are looking at.

Also, the overall acceptance rate is less than 34.28% for Fall 2024.
It sounds like they were just pulling numbers out of their arse for the article.
