Sports betting has ruined this sport just as much or more as NIL, conference realignment, and all the usual topics trotted out.
People tend to be focused on which team is getting favored. That is flawed because their conclusion usually is the opposing team because they can’t separate their bias. But if you look at every game with point shaving in mind, some games stand out a lot more than others.
Wonder why your team has 0 yards of penalties one week and 150 the next? I used to think it was just different crews with different levels of tolerance for various infractions. But you can follow the same crews week to week and see they are just not consistent. I no longer trust officiating after decades of having no major complaints.

This is incorrect. It is only against the rules if it's intent is a disconcerting signal. No player shall use words or signals that disconcert opponents when they are preparing to put the ball in play. For some reason the "penalty details" you quoted are not in the link you provided.
The rule was changed for 2025. The defense is not allowed to clap. If you don’t believe me, Google is your friend. This season defensive players can not clap even to get the attention of teammates.
It is weird how many people seem to be willing to die on this hill when a 20 second search would answer the question.
Head of College Officials - Clapping Not Allowed by Defense
Clapping by defensive players is addressed at 1:56.

Mike Periera and Steve Shaw, head of college football officiating, both say the defense is not allowed to clap. Period.
Even the rule you posted says the defense can not use a clap. It doesn’t say when or why, it says they can not clap.

My dude, that is why that whole situation was so fricked up. Either Auburn scored a TD by getting the ball over the plane of the Georgia end zone or a Georgia defender forced a fumble short of the goal line that was picked up by another Georgia defender that was never down and ran into the Auburn end zone without the play being blown dead.
By the action on the field, that play should have been reviewed to have been a TD for one team or the other after the 10 minutes they looked over it.
Yore right that it should have been a free play for Auburn considering half of the Georgia defensive line lined up offside.

Nah, they are clapping and should have been a penalty.
That’s irrelevant.
Kirby called a timeout and they let him say he didn’t even though they knew he did.

Time to bring back Tom Ritter and Penn Wagers.

Didn’t he call the time out AFTER the Auburn player clapped? That was why he was so worked up.
Had they thrown the flag on the defense the rest of that sequence goes very different.
There is no doubt this crew was a train wreck that night. But they aren’t the first. There are multiple games every season that are officiated just as bad and nothing is done.
I am curious what was different about this one that led to an indefinite suspension.

You don’t get to call a time out and complain that other team was committing a penalty and then not have the timeout awarded.
He could’ve been yelling that the refs missed something with the time keeping and called a timeout. They have to award the timeout.
They cannot both not award the asked for timeout and have a stoppage of play. It’s pretty simple.

I am not arguing he shouldn’t have been charged a timeout. And I am not arguing the crew got it right, they were horrible.
I am arguing that if they had correctly thrown a flag then “Clap Gate” never happens.
It very well was a makeup call. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Unless you are a college football official.

I think Kirby should have also been suspended and fined at least 500k for that bull shite not matter what his retarded excuse was.

The refs all the time in the NFL and College that teams won't be charged a timeout after a discussion with the refs.

The picture you posted says when the ball is being prepared to put into play. The defender wasn't clapping when the ball was being prepared to put into play. He clapped when the QB left the formation to audible the play.

is this yellowhammer site legit?
It's a legit Alabama news website. The owner is politically connected in Alabama and the SEC office is based in Birmingham, so their sources are probably legit.

Let’s review the officials who allowed the Auburn DB to slam the Mizzou WR to the ground after the whistle on the last drive of regulation. A proper call would have put Mizzou well within FG range with time to spare. Get over it Aubies. Bad calls go both ways.
