I agree Dc, and I’ve got nothing against Arkansas, BTW. Love everything about the atmosphere there. By today’s standards, Arkansas is the champion for 1964. Got unlucky in 1965 because of the change in how the champion was determined. And should have won the 1977 title. OU had a shot at the title as well and that 31-6 drubbing by Arkansas should have given them the title. Still don’t get how Notre Dame got it.

I think Arkansas had enough integrity not to claim 65 because of the loss to LSU in the Cotton Bowl. The starting QB for Arkansas had a shoulder injury and left in the first half and the offense sputtered.

They should have split the title in 77 as Notre Dame lost to a 5-6 Ole Miss team and yes they did beat Texas in the Cotton Bowl but that loss with Ole Miss should have given them a split title. But because Notre Dame has more pull and a lot sportswriters in big cities like Chicago, they had an advantage.

Lou Holtz was a good coach but those were Frank Broyles players on that team. I believe the stress from the 69 game with Texas scarred him for life. I believe he would have been a better coach and not had an early retirement.
