The Southeastern Conference is moving to a 10-game conference SEC schedule, sources told AL.com.

The league has also moved back the start of the season to Sept. 26.

An official announcement is expected to be made at 3:45 p.m. CT. The decision comes after the SEC’s presidents and chancellors met virtually on Thursday.

SEC moving to conference-only 2020 schedule

ETA:

Official Release

quote:

The 2020 SEC football season will be comprised of a 10-game Conference-only schedule and the SEC Football Championship Game will be played December 19 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, rescheduled from the original date of December 5. The schedule will include one mid-season open date for each school and an open date on December 12 for all schools.

This action was taken following extensive discussions and thorough deliberation among the SEC's Presidents and Chancellors, Athletics Directors, Conference Office staff, and medical advisors, led by the SEC's Return to Activity and Medical Guidance Task Force.

The decision to limit competition to Conference-only opponents and rescheduling the SEC Championship Game is based on the need for maximum flexibility in making any necessary scheduling adjustments while reacting to developments around the pandemic and continued advice from medical professionals.

The rescheduled start to the season will allow the SEC to continue to monitor health trends across its 11-state footprint, as well as monitor developments in technology around mitigation and treatment of the virus.

A revised schedule for the 2020 SEC football season will be announced at a later date following approval by the Conference's athletics directors.

Further decisions regarding safety standards related to athletics events, tailgating and other game day activities, including social distancing, face covering and other health measures consistent with CDC, state and local guidelines, will be announced at a later date.

Then why does the ACC have a plus one? Isn’t that just so we can have the traditional rivalry games?

So Florida State is prepared to play Florida, Clemson is prepared to play SC, and Tech/UGA, and the SEC is not going to accomodate those rivalries? Sounds like a bad move to me.

SEC don't need the schedule bump
ACC does
10 games is a big enough sample and league champ will be in the playoffs

Wow, the SEC is officially afraid of the ACC.

Way back down from the ACC, SEC office.

Games aren’t played because they make the most sense. Good lord. These are rivals most of which that have played each other every year for 100+ years.

That concerns me too, as in "we're going to wait this out to see if we'll even have football this year."

Conference only doesn’t make a lick of sense. How is Florida traveling to Tallahassee to play Florida St worse than Florida traveling to Knoxville for UT?

Dumb as frick

Why a conference-only approach?

Most importantly, it allows the conference to control all the primary factors. The league can establish uniform protocols, especially around COVID-19 testing, that all schools have to follow.

Next, if a game must be canceled or postponed, which most insiders view as likely at some point, it is easier to handle all the ramifications of that in-conference than coordinate with another conference.

Starting late makes me think the SEC is waiting to see how the virus does in other conferences.

I got a feeling we won’t see football . I hope that’s not the case.

I think SEC did it on purpose when the ACC removed the kickoff classic games from the SEC schedule
